← Day 398

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the garden

Midday work at dock and garden

Kevin works at the dock on the mooring ring reinforcement while Jenny tends the garden beds and seed trays at the cottage.

Kevin drilled a new bolt hole through the dock mortise from the dinghy and secured the mooring ring with a bronze bolt and washers, stabilizing it against lateral loads. Jenny made a precise scalpel incision over her infected ankle, drained a small amount of pus, flushed with boiled saline, and applied a fresh poultice and dressing, reducing immediate pressure and heat.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You stand on the dock at high tide, water lapping the planks. The mooring ring shifts in its mortise when you test it — the four vertical-grain oak wedges driven yesterday hold, but the ring still has play. The bronze bolt sits ready. You need to drive it through the ring flange into the timber below, but the angle is awkward from the dock surface.

🔧 Kevin07:24

Kevin — climb down the dock ladder into the dinghy, brace against the gunwale, and assess the drilling angle from water level

💭 peek at the thought
The ring's still moving. Wedges bought time, not permanence. Need to drill through the flange and pin it with the bronze bolt before the supply boat comes. Angle's tight from up here — might need to work from the dinghy at high water or wait for the tide to drop and kneel in the wet.

🔧 Kevin07:28

Kevin — climb back up the ladder, fetch the brace, 12mm auger bit, bronze bolt, washers, and a mallet from the workshop

💭 peek at the thought
From the dinghy I can see the ring flange clear. The mortise is wet, the oak wedges tight but the timber around them is soft. If I drill straight down through the flange into the beam, the bronze bolt will hold it. Need the brace and bit, and a way to keep the drill steady with the boat moving.

🔧 Kevin07:32

Kevin — lash the dinghy bow and stern tight to the dock cleats with the heavy weather line and a spare warp, then lower the brace and bit into the boat

💭 peek at the thought
Got the gear. Tide's still high enough to work from the dinghy but the swell's making it rock. Best to lash the dinghy tight to the dock first, both bow and stern, so it doesn't dance while I'm drilling. Then brace, drill, drive the bolt home.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

You move to the garden beds, the shade cloth snapping softly in the still air. The tomato seedlings stand staked and twined, true leaves healthy. But the pepper and lettuce trays show more damping-off fuzz at the soil line — two more lettuce cells lost overnight.

🌿 Jenny07:23

Not today. Not like this.

Kneel despite the sharp spike in my ankle, carefully brushing the white mold off the healthy seedlings with a sterilized toothpick.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't stop this rot, the whole season is gone before the boat even hits the dock.

🌿 Jenny07:27

(Kevin! Check the mooring ring again!)

Reach for the first aid kit, pulling out the scalpel and the antiseptic; I have to drain this thing before the storm hits.

💭 peek at the thought
The sky is turning the color of a bad bruise, and the pressure is dropping.

🌿 Jenny07:32

Breathe, Jenny. Just breathe.

Sit on the garden bench, prop my ankle up on a crate, and steady the blade for the incision.

💭 peek at the thought
The skin is too tight, shiny, and I can see the red pulsing of the infection.
