The Gathering Storm

The flat sky has finally broken, and a sharp gust of wind whips the dust across the island. Kevin and Jenny meet on the porch as the pressure begins to dip sharply, the first heavy drops of rain hitting the parched garden soil.

The air is heavy and humid, the 31°C heat beginning to break as the cloud cover thickens. The tide is rising steadily against the dock pilings, and the wind has turned noticeably cool. Inside the cottage, the smell of drying mint and sea beet competes with the metallic scent of the coming storm.

🌿 Jenny09:19

We need to get the seed tin inside, now. The wind is already turning cold.

grab the tin of seeds from the table, then bolt the kitchen door.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping faster than I thought; if this storm hits before the boat comes, the seedlings will be washed away.

🔧 Kevin09:19

Right behind you.

grab the heirloom seed packets drying on the kitchen table and the notebook with sea beet sketches, shove them into the canvas roll, bolt the porch door and throw the latch, then move to secure the generator tarp on the porch with the spare

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving fast for someone who could barely walk yesterday. The pressure drop is real — I can feel it in my chest. Tin first, then everything else that blows.

🌿 Jenny09:21

Watch the way! Get it down from the wind, I'll check the radio.

move to the window to check the own, then ensure the rain tank is secured.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up fast; if that tarp catches enough air, it'll rip the grommets out.

🔧 Kevin09:21

Generator's tied. Radio's yours.

pull the spare tarp tight over the generator on the porch, lash it down with the heavy weather line to the porch posts, cinch the timber strips over the leading edge, weight it with the tool bag, then check the rain tank straps and the gard

💭 peek at the thought
Generator's heavy but the tarp's loose. If the wind gets under it we lose the cover and the exhaust tape. She's at the radio — good, she's warm and dry. I'll batten this down proper.

🌿 Jenny09:23

The wind's shifting. We need to get inside before the real rain starts.

check the barometer on the shelf, then sit to wrap my own.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is bottoming out. If this storm holds, I won't be able to reach the northern shelf tomorrow.

🔧 Kevin09:23

Stove's laid. Match in the tin by the hearth.

step inside, pull the kitchen door shut hard against the wind, throw the bolt, drop the canvas roll with seeds and notebook on the table, strike a match and light the kindling in the wood stove, then pour two mugs of water from the tank and

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's still dropping. She's wrapping her ankle one-handed — swelling's up again. Rain's coming sideways now. Need the door shut and the stove going.

🌿 Jenny09:25

Storm's coming in hard. I feel it.

sit on the bench by the stove and unwrap the bandage to check the poultice.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat from the stove is good, but the air is still getting too heavy.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin09:25

Pressure's 982 and falling. Wind'll back southwest by midnight. We hold the cottage.

set the two mugs on the table, pull the chair out opposite her, sit heavy, open the tin of mackerel with the knife, fork a portion into each mug with hot water from the kettle, slide one across the table, then watch her face while I eat

💭 peek at the thought
She's pale. The poultice is holding but the heat coming off that leg — infection's still fighting. Wind's howling round the corners now. Pressure's going to bottom out before midnight. We ride it out here.
