The Intruder in the Rows

Kevin and Jenny stand by the garden wall as the air grows heavy with the falling pressure. In the shade of the shade cloth, several tomato plants have been shredded, and deep, wide drag marks cut through the damp soil toward the fence.

Kevin and Jenny investigate disturbed vegetation near the garden perimeter as the sky darkens. They search for signs of an intruder or wild animal but find no clear tracks or fur, only general crushed undergrowth in the damp soil.

🔧 Kevin11:38

Not wind. Tracks go straight to the fence line.

crouch at the edge of the shredded plants, running fingers through the disturbed soil, checking the drag marks for claw impressions or fur

💭 peek at the thought
Something big came through here. Not birds, not wind. The drag marks are too wide, too deep. Badger? Otter? Whatever it is, it went under or over the fence. The tomatoes are wrecked.

🌿 Jenny11:39

Don't touch the edges. We need to see if there are any distinct prints before the moisture settles the soil.

Kneel beside him and lean in close to inspect the drag marks, looking for scales or skin fragments.

💭 peek at the thought
Too wide for a crab, too deep for a bird. Something heavy came through here while we were inside.

🔧 Kevin11:40

Kevin — stay crouched, not touching, eyes tracking the drag marks toward the fence gap where they disappear under the bottom rail

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Disturbing the edges loses the detail. The soil's still damp — prints should hold if I don't smudge them. Need to check the fence line where the marks exit.

🌿 Jenny11:40

It went under the rail. Look at the displacement—it's heavy.

Stand up slowly and peer through the gap in the fence, scanning the perimeter of the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
It didn't just pass through; it targeted the tomatoes. Whatever it is, it's still out there, or it's gone back to the woods.

🔧 Kevin11:43

Not otter. Otter don't wreck tomatoes.

stand, hands on hips, scanning the ground outside the fence line for continuation of the trail

💭 peek at the thought
Heavy. Wider than a badger. The displacement at the fence rail — that's shoulders pushing through. Otter's possible but they don't usually shred tomato plants. Something came in hungry and left dragging weight.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:43

Whatever it is, it's not looking for fish.

Walk to the edge of the wall and look for broken branches or crushed undergrowth beyond the fence.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right. Otters are opportunistic, but they don't flatten a patch like this. This feels... deliberate.

🔧 Kevin11:44

Trail leads somewhere. Woods or beach.

step over the low fence, following the crushed vegetation toward the tree line, moving slow to keep the sign visible

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracking it already. Smart. The trail continues outside — broken stems, crushed moss. Whatever it is, it didn't stop at the fence. It's moving toward the woods or the beach. Need to know which before dark.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:45

Wait for me. I'm coming.

Step over the fence and follow him, keeping a sharp eye on the foliage for any unnatural bends or snapped twigs.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't just stand here while he walks off into the brush. If it's something territorial, he's walking straight into it.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin11:46

Boar. Big. Hair on the thorn — see it?

point to the coarse dark bristle caught on the hawthorn, then continue tracking toward the woods edge

💭 peek at the thought
She's close behind. Good. Two sets of eyes. The trail's clear enough — snapped bramble, crushed fern, a tuft of coarse dark hair caught on a hawthorn thorn. Not otter. Not badger. Boar. Feral pig. Big one by the width of the track. They root for tubers, but they'll take tomatoes, eggs, anything. And they come back.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:47

I don't recall any wild pigs in the reports. If there's a boar here, the whole understory is at risk.

Lean in to examine the bristle, then quickly follow Kevin toward the woods.

💭 peek at the thought
Boar? On this island? That's not on any of the surveys. It must have swam or been dropped here.
