The approaching storm

The wind picks up from the east, rattling the canvas rolls against the house. You meet at the garden gate to secure the tools before the first heavy drops fall.

The wind shifted sharply to the west as the heavy rain began to lash the island. Kevin struggled to secure the waterlogged crate at the dock before the swell increased, while Jenny focused on protecting the garden's delicate heirloom seeds from the driving deluge.

🌿 Jenny11:48

It's shifting. We need to get everything inside now or the wind will scatter the hardware.

Gather the crowbar and any loose tools from the garden soil and carry them toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is actually cramping. I need to eat something, but the rain is coming and the tools are out.

🔧 Kevin11:49

Crowbar's by the south bed. I'll get the tarp stakes.

gather the tarp stakes and loose hardware from the garden beds and head for the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing east. Barometer at 996 steady but that shift means rain's coming hard. Need the crowbar back inside anyway — crate still needs opening.

🌿 Jenny11:50

I've got the bar.

Walk to the south bed, grip the heavy crowbar, and carry it back toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so efficient. It makes me feel like I'm lagging behind, even when I'm just trying to be careful.

🔧 Kevin11:50

Crate still lashed?

scoop up the last handful of seed packets and the hand trowel, then jog toward the cottage porch

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's got the heavy one. I'll clear the rest and check the crate's still lashed down above the tide line while I'm moving.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:52

Still lashed, but barely. I'll check it once we're in.

Follow Kevin toward the porch, keeping a sharp eye on the crate's position against the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't forget that crate. If the wind catches the lid or the lashings snap, the contents could be swept right back into the surf.

🔧 Kevin11:52

Generator oil first. Then radio at eighteen hundred.

step onto the porch, shake off the worst of the wet, and push through the cottage door

💭 peek at the thought
Barely means it'll be gone by morning if this blows hard. We'll batten it proper once the rain lets up. First — get dry, get the radio schedule, get the generator topped off before dark.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:54

Right. Oil first.

Set the crowbar down by the door and follow him inside.

💭 peek at the thought
Always a schedule. I can't think about the radio yet; I can't think about anything until I've had some calories and checked those seeds for mold.

🔧 Kevin11:55

Kettle on?

cross to the generator, pull the dipstick, wipe it on a rag, read the level

💭 peek at the thought
Inside. Warmth hits. Smell of woodsmoke and damp wool. Generator's in the corner — ran it hard yesterday, oil'll be low. Radio on the table, battery at sixty percent. Kettle's cold. Jenny's close behind me. Day forty and the list doesn't shrink.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:57

On it now.

Walk to the stove, fill the kettle, and wait for the flame to catch.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm starving, but the smell of the salt and damp wood is making my head spin.

🔧 Kevin11:57

Half a quart down. Topping it.

unscrew the oil fill cap, pour from the can until the dipstick reads full, wipe the spill, replace the cap

💭 peek at the thought
Dipstick shows halfway — burned a quart in the last run. Top it up from the can before it seizes. Radio schedule at eighteen hundred, Tom's frequency silent as ever. Crate needs proper lashing before dark. Kettle clicks on.
