The Falling Pressure Sells

Jenny sits at the table spreading the damp heirloom seeds onto paper to dry. Kevin stands over her, watching the barometer needle as it steadily steadily toward 974 hPa.

Kevin spent the morning reinforcing the dock's mooring ring as the air pressure continues to drop. Jenny attempted to organize the heirloom seeds but found the pain in her ankle made sitting and focusing difficult.

Stop staring at the glass, Kevin. It isn't going to go up just because you're watching it.

Jenny adjusts a tiny sea beet seed with tweezers, her ankle throbbing with every movement.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping again. If the storm hits before the boat comes, these seeds will rot in the humidity.

🔧 Kevin10:26

Didn't say it would.

Walk to the porch and check the generator lashings, then scan the horizon toward the mainland.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The needle doesn't care. But 974 and falling this fast means something's building out there — not just the usual swell.

🌿 Jenny10:27

The clouds are turning that color. We need to secure the tarp again.

Jenny picks up her pencil to sketch the sea beet morphology one last time, her hand trembling slightly.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking for a boat that isn't there yet. The air is getting too heavy.

🔧 Kevin10:29

On it.

Grab the timber strips and rope from the shed, then haul myself up onto the porch roof to re-stake and lash the tarp corners tight before the wind picks up.

💭 peek at the thought
She's noticed the light — bruised underside of the clouds. Tarp's loose on the windward edge. If it flaps loose, it'll shred by noon.

🌿 Jenny10:30

Watch the north corner! The wind is going to catch the overlap.

Jenny carefully gathers the paper sheets of seeds and tucks them under the heavy tin to keep them from blowing away.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually helping for once. If that tarp holds, my grandmother's seeds might survive the night.

🔧 Kevin10:31

Got it.

Plant my knee on the tarp to hold the overlap, drive the stake deep with the mallet, then whip the rope around it three times and tie off with a trucker's hitch. Repeat on the other three corners, then check the center ridge for sag.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching my back. Good. The north flap's already lifting — if it catches, it'll peel the whole thing back like a sail.

🌿 Jenny10:31

It's holding, for now. Check the radio again.

Jenny pulls her leg up to her chest, wincing as the gauze rubs against the infection.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is finally moving now. If the roof leaks, the whole collection is ruined.

🔧 Kevin10:32

Calling him now.

Step inside, pick up the handset, key the mic. "Tom, this is Kevin on Sorrel. 0800 check. Over."

💭 peek at the thought
She's hurting bad and still thinking of the radio. Right. 0800 window. Tom's frequency.

🌿 Jenny10:33

He's not answering yet.

Jenny closes her eyes, listening to the wind start to howl through the stone cracks.

💭 peek at the thought
Static. It's always static when the pressure drops this fast. I'm so alone in this.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:35

He'll hear it. Or he won't. I'll call again at noon.

Hang up the handset, then walk back to the porch to check the generator exhaust tape and the fuel line clamps — last thing we need is a fire or a dead engine in this.

💭 peek at the thought
Static's loud. Atmospherics building. He might not hear me. Or he hears and doesn't answer. Either way, I keep the schedule.
