The Approaching Front

Kevin and Jenny meet inside the cottage as the first heavy gusts of wind pick up, rattling the eaves.

Kevin and Jenny tended to Jenny's infected ankle, reapplying poultice and fresh gauze. The wound showed no spreading heat or redness. Kevin secured the sea beet seed tin on a high shelf and sat with Jenny as the barometer held steady at 977 hPa.

🌿 Jenny10:35

The storm is coming in faster than the forecast. I need to check the gauze.

Lean heavily against the kitchen table, wincing as I shift weight away from my swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is holding steady but my ankle is throbbing in time with the wind; I can't even sit straight today.

🔧 Kevin10:37

Sit. I'll check the gauze. You did the garden tarp?

Walk to the first aid kit on the shelf, pull out clean gauze and antiseptic, set them on the table beside her.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the ankle hard. Barometer's dropping faster than St. John's said. Need to get the storm lines tight and the generator lashed before the real blow hits.

🌿 Jenny10:37

The tarp is weighted down with stones, but I should have checked the anchors again.

Sit on the kitchen chair, letting out a sharp breath as I lift my leg onto the stool.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's just the tarp, but the wind is rising enough to rip the stakes from the earth.

🔧 Kevin10:39

Anchors held forty knots last month. Stones'll do for now. Let me see.

Kneel, unwrap the dressing carefully, check the wound for heat or spreading redness, reapply poultice and fresh gauze, wrap firm but not tight.

💭 peek at the thought
Anchors held last blow. Stones shift. Should've driven stakes. She's white-knuckling the chair.

🌿 Jenny10:39

Jenny — watch him work, my fingers twitching against the edge of the table.

💭 peek at the thought
way hands are too careful, it makes me feel like a broken specimen he's trying to salvage. 달리SAY: It's just throbbing. I need to sort the sea way before the light goes out completely.

🔧 Kevin10:41

Looking clean. No heat. Keep the weight off it.

Tape the dressing off, set the used gauze aside for burning, sit back on heels.

💭 peek at the thought
Clean edges, no heat, drainage down. Antibiotics working. She's holding her breath.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:41

I know. The barometer is dropping again anyway.

Reach for the tin of sea beet seeds, my hand trembling from the effort.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't walk to the ridge tomorrow, the seeds just rot in the tin.

🔧 Kevin10:42

Seeds aren't going anywhere. Put the tin down.

Reach over, cover her hand with mine, steady it.

💭 peek at the thought
She's shaking. Pain and the pressure drop both. Seeds can wait.

🌿 Jenny10:43

I just wanted to have them done before the boat came.

Let the tin slide across the wood of the table, metal thudding softly.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so patient when I'm losing my mind over a handful of seeds.

🔧 Kevin10:44

They're done. Dry, sorted, tinned. Boat takes them whether the envelope's perfect or not.

Pick up the tin, set it on the high shelf out of reach, pull the chair closer and sit.

💭 peek at the thought
Three days to the boat. She's racing something in her head. The seeds are dry, labelled, tinned. Done enough.
