Shortwave call to Tom
Kevin sits at the radio with the handset, Jenny beside him with the barometer and her notebook. The static clears on Tom's frequency. The supply boat is three days out. The storm front presses closer.
Kevin heads out to the garden to check the shade cloth and the dinghy lines while Jenny stays at the table, focused on the sea beet seeds. The air remains heavy as the atmospheric pressure continues to hold.
Tom. Kevin. Day four-zero-one. Barometer nine-seven-seven holding. Dock ring solid — greenheart shims and oak wedges holding at high tide. Supply boat three days out per last contact. Jenny's ankle improving, no spread. We're still here. Frequency open zero-eight-hundred, twelve-hundred, eighteen-hundred, twenty-two-hundred daily. Out.
set the handset back in its cradle and reach for the coffee pot

Check the barometer again. It hasn't moved in an hour.
Take a sip of broth and reach for the sea beet seeds.

One sec. I'll tap it and check the trend.
pick up the barometer, give it a gentle sideways tap to free the needle, then hold it level and watch for movement while Jenny sips her broth

It's still holding for now, but the air feels heavy.
Sort a handful of sea beet seeds into the tin, carefully separating the husks.

Glass at nine-seven-seven. Not moving yet. But if that heaviness is what I think, we'll see it fall by evening. You want me to run the shade cloth lines tighter and check the dinghy springs while you finish the seeds?
set the barometer back on the shelf, pull on my jacket, and head for the porch door

Check the springs twice. The dinghy can't take another surge.
Ignore the throbbing in my ankle and focus on the tiny seeds in my palm.
