Midday meal
Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen as the rain slows slightly. The water tank is now completely full.
The warm rain continues in rhythmic patters, drumming against the roof of the cottage. The tide is high, the water lapping steadily against the dock pilings and the lower garden wall. Inside, the air is thick with the scent of damp earth and the drying herbs and sea beet.
Yanmar's steady. Vibration's still there past half throttle but she'll push us home. Dock ring's holding. Tank topped off.
set down the oil-stained rag on the porch rail and step inside, wiping hands on trousers

Good. The barometer is actually rising, though. Don't get too comfortable yet.
Close the notebook on the sea beet sketches and rub my aching ankle.

Not comfortable. Just noting what held. You walked to the garden and back.
pull out a chair at the kitchen table and sit, leaning forward with elbows on knees

The garden is still a mess, Kevin. I didn't get to the weeds today.
Look down at the tin of my grandmother's seeds sitting on the counter.

Weeds'll keep. Seeds are dry. That's what matters.
reach over and tap the tin lightly with one finger

It's not just about being dry. If I plant them wrong, they die anyway.
Pull the tin slightly closer to my hand and trace the rusted metal edge.
