The Turning Tide

The water begins to creep back over the rocks as Kevin moves toward the dinghy to test the engine. The pressure remains steady, but the clouds thicken.

Kevin took the dinghy out to test the Yanmar engine under load while the tide began to rise. Jenny stayed at the cottage, tending to her ankle and documenting sea beet morphology as the rain continued.

🌿 Jenny11:33

Don't go too far out, the tide is coming in faster than the charts said.

Sit on the porch step and open the medical kit to check the ankle for swelling.

💭 peek at the thought
If that boat doesn't come, I'm out of gauze and I can’t even walk to the spring next week.

🔧 Kevin11:35

Won't go past the point. Fifteen minutes, twenty tops. Radio's on channel 16 if you need anything.

walk to the dinghy, untie the stern line and forward spring, push off and climb in, start the Yanmar and let it warm at idle

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the tide — it's pushing hard against the wind. But the Yanmar needs a proper load test, not just idling at the dock. I'll take her just past the point, run her up through the gears, and be back before the current gets ugly.

🌿 Jenny11:35

Keep the radio on, the wind is shifting.

Unwrap the damp gauze from my ankle and inspect the redness around the infection.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks fifteen minutes is a guarantee, but the current doesn't care about his schedule.

🔧 Kevin11:36

Radio's on. Volume up. Back before the tide turns hard.

ease the throttle forward, steer the dinghy out past the dock toward the point, listening to the engine note

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing southwest — she's got the weather eye. Radio's already on, volume up. She doesn't need to tell me twice.

🌿 Jenny11:37

Keep an eye on the barometer, it's dropping again.

Wipe the fluid from the wound with a clean cloth and apply the antibiotic cream.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is moving too fast for a quick return; he's being optimistic with the current.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:39

Watching it. Engine's clean at eighteen hundred. Taking her to twenty-five hundred now.

increase throttle to 2500 RPM, hold course past the point, feel for vibration through the tiller and hull

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer was 980 and rising when I left the cottage. If it's dropping again, the front's moving faster than forecast. Engine's running clean at 1800 RPM — no vibration through the tiller yet. Push it to 2500, hold it there, feel for the shake.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:40

Don't overrev it, the salt is already thick in the intake.

Wrap the ankle in fresh gauze and secure the brace tight, but not cutting.

💭 peek at the thought
If he pushes the engine that hard in this swell, he'll strain something before the boat arrives.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:41

Not overrevving. Twenty-five hundred's the sweet spot — that's where the vibration lived before. Running clean. No shake.

hold 2500 RPM for a full minute, watch the temp gauge, listen for any change in engine note

💭 peek at the thought
Salt in the intake's a fair point — the air filter's seen better days. But 2500's not overrevving, it's where the vibration showed itself last time. Holding steady. Hull's quiet. Tiller's steady. No shake through the deck plates. Maybe the sleeve and truing actually held.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:41

If it's holding, keep it there. The tide is turning fast.

Open the notebook and start sketching the sea beet morphology while I wait.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the vibration, but the sea is still winning this fight.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:45

Holding clean. Temp steady. Bringing her back in now.

ease throttle back to idle, turn the dinghy toward the dock, navigate the turning current

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — tide's turning hard now, current ripping past the point. Engine's holding clean at 2500. Temp needle steady mid-range. No vibration, no smoke, no missing. The bronze sleeve and prop shaft true held. Four hundred hours of work and it's finally right. Time to bring her back before the current makes a fool of me.
