The tide turns
Kevin and Jenny meet at the dock edge as the water begins to climb back up the rock shelf. The air is heavy with the thickening clouds overhead.
Kevin checks the dock mooring ring as the tide rises, noting the looseness in the mortise. Jenny stays at the cottage, managing her ankle pain while watching the overcast sky. The humid air is heavy, and the pressure continues to drop steadily.
We need to get off the dock. Now. That plank's about to let go.
Grab Jenny's arm and pull her back toward the cottage, stepping onto solid ground just as the dock shudders under our weight.

I saw it. The wood is complete mush through.
I limp toward the cottage, clutching my ankle to hide the sharp hitch in my breath.

Inside. I'll tape the ankle again, proper this time. And you're staying off it for the rest of the day.
Walk beside her toward the cottage, hand hovering near her elbow in case she needs it, not touching unless she leans.

Jenny — i sink into the kitchen chair, stretching my leg out under the table and wincing as the movement flares the infection.

Let me see it. Take the boot off.
Pull the first aid kit from the shelf, set it on the table, and kneel to unlatch her boot, peeling the wet wool sock back slow so the fabric doesn't stick to the wound.

way be careful. It's sensitive.
I lean back against the counter, biting my lip to keep from crying as the cool air hits the raw skin.
