The Tide Reaches Low

The water has hit its lowest point, exposing the barnacled-covered pilings.

Kevin walked the dock pilings at low tide to inspect the structural integrity and the greenheart sister planks. Jenny stayed by the cottage, monitoring her ankle and watching the water recede from the rocky tide pools.

🔧 Kevin16:01

(to Jenny) Going to walk the pilings now. Back in twenty.

walk the dock pilings at low tide, inspect greenheart sister plank alignment and north piling shim, check mooring chain wear at waterline

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Low tide means I can see the full extent of the scour under the greenheart plank and the piling bases. Need to check the north piling shim I drove yesterday — verify it's still seated — and measure the void under the sister plank before the water comes back.

Don't go too far, the wood is slick.

Lean back against the cottage wall, rubbing the swollen skin of my ankle while watching the water recede.

💭 peek at the thought
If he stays out there too long and the tide turns, I'll be stuck alone with this heat and the rotting wood.

🔧 Kevin16:02

Won’t be long. Just checking the shims and the chain where it bites the piling.

walk slowly along the dock, testing each piling with the toe of my boot for slip, inspect the north piling toe where I drove the cedar shim yesterday, then move to the mooring ring to recheck the greenheart sister plank’s alignment and the

💭 peek at the thought
Her ankle’s still tender. She’s trying not to worry, but her voice is tight. I’ll keep it quick — just enough to see what’s holding and what’s giving way.

Jenny — pull my sketchbook from my waist and start

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't see the rot the salt is taking, just like the infection taking my leg. continuedSAY: Watch out for the planks, they are soft as sponge.

🔧 Kevin16:05

(over my shoulder) Page with the tide pool zones is dry. Salt gland sketches still damp.

continue along the dock, crouch at the north piling to check the cedar shim seating with my fingers, tap the greenheart sister plank bolts with the wrench to confirm they haven't backed out, run my hand along the mooring chain where it kiss

💭 peek at the thought
She's got the book. Means she's staying put on the porch — good. Less weight on the ankle. I keep moving.

🌿 Jenny16:05

The humidity is too high for the ink today.

Sketch the detailed morphology of the sea much's salt glands on the margin of the page.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focused on the hardware while I'm focused on the cells in my blood.

🔧 Kevin16:07

(without stopping) Cedar shim’s shot. Oak wedges held the ring last time — I’ll swap them in after I check the chain.

finish inspecting the mooring chain link where it rests on the piling cap — look for wear, corrosion, or signs of chafing where the link bites wood — then step back to sight down the plank alignment from the end of the dock

💭 peek at the thought
She’s focused — that’s a sign the pain’s eased enough for her to work. The shim’s split again, as expected. Cedar won’t hold in this rot. Need oak or nothing. I’ll note it and move on before I lose the window.

🌿 Jenny16:08

Be careful with the weight, the wood barely holding on.

Trace the swollen line of my ankle, feeling the heat radiating through the gauze.

💭 peek at the thought
If those planks are gone, the boat won't even get close to the jetty.

🔧 Kevin16:09

Crown link's half gone. I'll swap it before the boat comes. Oak wedges first — they'll hold the ring while I work.

climb back up to the dock decking, retrieve the oak wedges from the workshop, drive four vertical-grain oak wedges into the mooring ring mortise with the mallet until the ring locks solid, then coil the heavy weather line and carry it to th

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching my weight on the dock, not her ankle. The chain's worn thin at the crown link — 40% gone, maybe more. One good surge and it parts. That's the job for today. Oak wedges for the ring mortise, then sister the chain before the next tide.

🌿 Jenny16:09

The tide is going out fast. Don't stay out.

Watch the water recede from the pilings, exposing the barnacles and the slick wood.

💭 peek at the thought
He's working so hard again, but the rot is too deep in the wood.
