← Day 409

the keeper's cottage · day 409 · afternoon

The storm intensifies

The wind shifts from a steady gust to a sharp howl, whistling through the eaves. The tide is now lapping at the pilings.

The rain has intensified into a heavy drumming against the cottage roof, and the wind from the west is picking up, carrying the scent of salt and ozone. The tide is at its peak, water lapping at the lower edge of the dock planks while the barometer continues its slow, steady descent.

Jenny — I'm walking the dock. Back in ten.

walk to the dock to inspect the mooring ring and pilings at high tide

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing west and the barometer's still falling. Tide's pushing hard against the pilings — if the mooring ring shifts now, the whole dock goes. Need eyes on it before the surge peaks.

Be careful! If you see the water topping the planks, get back inside immediately!

walk to the porch and watch him go, clutching the doorframe.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going out in this? The barometer is plummeting. If the surge hits while he's out there, he's just another piece of driftwood.

🔧 Kevin18:05

Watch the barometer. If it drops past 975, batten the porch door and get the ditch bag ready.

climb down the ladder to the dock planks, testing each step before weighting it, and crouch to inspect the mooring ring mortise and chain shackle at waterline

💭 peek at the thought
She's right to worry. Planks are two feet above normal high water — if they're wet, the surge is already past what the tables said. My ankle'll take the ladder fine, but the ring mortise is the weak link. Oak wedges held last tide, but this wind's got teeth.

🌿 Jenny18:05

I've got it. Just don't let the tide pin you against the pilings!

walk back to the kitchen, check the barometer, and move the ditch bag closer to the door.

💭 peek at the thought
975 is a disaster. I can't be the one to tell him the island won't negotiate, but I'll have the bag ready.

🔧 Kevin18:07

Chain's worn thin at the crown. Shackle pin seized. Ring's holding but I'm not betting the dock on it. Rigging a backup to the aft bollard.

pull the heavy weather line from my belt, make a round turn and two half-hitches on the aft bollard, then lead it forward through the mooring ring and back to the bollard for a second spring, cinching it tight with a trucker's hitch

💭 peek at the thought
Water's licking the underside of the third plank from the seaward end. That's a good foot above charted high water. Ring mortise — oak wedges still seated, no fresh crush dust. Steel doubler plate bolts show no elongation. But the chain... crown links are paper-thin where they kiss the shackle. One good shock load and it parts. Shackle pin's still seized. Can't turn it by hand, won't risk a hammer blow this close to failure. Need to lash a backup to the bollard aft before the next set hits.

🌿 Jenny18:07

Hurry up, Kevin! The wind is changing!

stand by the window, watching his movements on the dock and glancing nervously at the barometer.

💭 peek at the thought
He's working against the clock and the tide. If that chain snaps now, the whole structure could shift.

🔧 Kevin18:09

Backup's holding. Ring's dead still. Coming up.

climb the ladder back to the porch, one hand on the rail the whole way, boots slipping on wet rungs

💭 peek at the thought
Trucker's hitch bites. Line's singing under tension — good sign. Ring's not moving now. Load's shared between the chain and the new spring. But the wind's shifted: was west, now southwest and building. That puts the fetch straight down the inlet. Waves will stack against the ebb. Next hour's the danger window. Need to get off this dock before a green one climbs the planks.

🌿 Jenny18:09

Get inside. Now.

open the porch door wide and reach out to steady him as he steps inside.

💭 peek at the thought
Thank god. He's shaking, and so am I. I can't tell if it's the cold or the fever coming back.
