Midday meal and storm watch

Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table with bowls of limpet broth and corned beef. The barometer reads 984 hPa. Wind rattles the loose shutter. The tide is rising fast outside.

The rain continues its steady, rhythmic drumming on the cottage roof as the pressure continues to drop. The tide is rising, pushing salt water toward the lower edge of the dock. Inside, the air is thick with the smell of drying sea beet and the salty scent of the boiling limpet broth.

🌿 Jenny17:53

It's dropping. 984. We should probably check the shutter before the wind picks up any more.

Sip the broth slowly and glance toward the rattling shutter.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is still sliding. If it hits 980, we're stuck inside. I can taste the salt in the broth; it's a bit heavy on the corned beef fat.

🔧 Kevin17:53

Aye. Finish your broth first. Then we'll look at it together.

eat limpet broth and corned beef at the kitchen table

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the shutter. The wind's already finding every gap. If that hinge gives in a gust we lose the window and the wall behind it. Need to check the dog bolts and the timber brace I fitted last week.

🌿 Jenny17:55

I'm finished.

Push the bowl away and stand up, leaning slightly on the table for balance.

💭 peek at the thought
He's in "manager mode" again. I can't just sit here while the wind tries to rip the house apart.

🔧 Kevin17:55

Right. I'll grab the wrench and the spare timber. You take the torch if the light goes.

walk to the porch to collect the heavy wrench and a spare two-by-four, then head to the loose shutter

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving stiff. Ankle's still bad even if she won't say. The lean tells me more than words. I'll do the climbing and the lifting. She can hand tools and hold the level.

🌿 Jenny17:57

I've got it.

Reach for the LED headlamp on the shelf and slide it onto my forehead.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't even walk to the porch without a wince, but I can carry a torch. I hope the rain doesn't get into the gear.

🔧 Kevin17:57

Thanks.

wait for Jenny at the shutter, wrench in hand, two-by-four under arm

💭 peek at the thought
She's quicker than I give her credit for. Headlamp saves me fumbling in the dark when the cloud cover thickens. Good call.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny17:59

Coming.

Limp toward the shutter, clicking the headlamp on to cut through the dim kitchen light.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already there. I need to move faster, but my ankle is throbbing with every step.

🔧 Kevin17:59

Hold the light on the bottom hinge. I'll check the dog bolt first—see if it's still seated.

inspect the shutter's bottom dog bolt and hinge plate for play or corrosion while Jenny holds the headlamp steady

💭 peek at the thought
The limp's worse than I thought. She's putting weight on the ball of that foot to keep pressure off the heel. If the shutter blows we'll both be soaked trying to nail it down in the rain.

🌿 Jenny18:01

There's a lot of play in the plate. It's practically rattling.

Lean in and aim the beam directly at the gap between the hinge plate and the stone.

💭 peek at the thought
The metal is pitted. If that bolt shears, the whole thing is just a sail for the wind to catch.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin18:01

Stone's gone soft around the fixings. We'll need to plug it with something that'll hold when it swells wet. Got any of that epoxy putty left?

scan the workbench by the stove for the epoxy tub while keeping one hand on the shutter to stop it rattling in the wind

💭 peek at the thought
The stone's spalling where the screws bite. No wonder it's loose. We need to fill the void before we can re-torque anything, or we'll just strip the holes again.
