Afternoon Shelter

The rain begins to taper slightly as the tide starts to turn. You both meet inside the kitchen to prepare a meal.

Kevin and Jenny ate tinned peaches from the washed-up crate in silence, discussing its suspicious origin. Kevin dismissed it as ship debris while Jenny insisted the careful packing suggested deliberate placement. They parted to their separate tasks as the tide rose.

🌿 Jenny13:21

Jenny — take the tinned peaches from the crate and set them on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
That crate wasn't from the supply boat. Someone else is here.

Peaches. Haven't had those in months.

Pull out two bowls and a spoon, set them on the table beside the tin.

💭 peek at the thought
Good haul. Peaches mean sugar, calories, something sweet after weeks of salt and tin. The crate paid out proper.

🌿 Jenny13:23

Where do you think they came from?

open the tin with the can opener, pour the syrup into the bowls.

💭 peek at the thought
He's avoiding the question.

🔧 Kevin13:23

Don't ask questions you don't want answers to.

Take a bowl, sip the syrup, then spear a peach half.

💭 peek at the thought
Could be from any ship passing the lane. Container vessel, tramp steamer, the supply boat itself if one went down before us. Doesn't matter much — seals held, syrup's clear, fruit's firm.

🌿 Jenny13:25

Jenny — sit across from him, eat the peach in silence.

💭 peek at the thought
He knows.

🔧 Kevin13:25

Kevin — eat the peach slowly, letting the sweetness sit on the tongue. Set the spoon down when the bowl's clean. Wipe hands on a cloth.

💭 peek at the thought
She's quiet. Not the comfortable kind. The kind where something's sitting behind the teeth. She'll say it or she won't. Pushing doesn't work with her — never has.

🌿 Jenny13:26

Did you see anyone on the ridge today?

look at the empty tin, waiting for a reaction.

💭 peek at the thought
The silence is heavier than the humidity.

🔧 Kevin13:26

No.

Pick up the empty tin, turn it over in my hands, check the seal rim for corrosion. Set it down.

💭 peek at the thought
Ridge. Hilltop. She's asking if I saw a person. On this island. Eleven months and the only tracks on that ridge have been ours, the birds', and the occasional goat. She knows this. So she's not asking about tracks.

🌿 Jenny13:28

The tide was high when this came in. It didn't just drift.

stand up, walk to the oven to check the seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
He's lying or he's as blind as I am.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin13:28

Current sets northeast past the point. Could've come off a ship three days out.

Stand, take the tin to the porch, drop it in the rubbish sack. Pause at the door, look up at the hilltop ridge through the grey. Turn back inside.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The crate rode a high tide over the reef and into the cove — that takes swell direction, timing, something pushing it. Not just drift. Someone put it in the water at the right hour. Or something did.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny13:30

It was packed too well for that.

open the oven door, check the temperature of the brandywine seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
A ship doesn't drop a crate of fresh peaches and rope by accident.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin13:30

Supply boat caches on the north cay. They'd have raised us.

Walk to the stove, put the kettle on. Lean against the counter, arms folded, watching the oven thermometer through the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
Packed well. Tins sealed, rope dry, labels salt-blurred but legible underneath. Someone knew how to stow for sea. Not a panicked abandon-ship. Deliberate. Could be the supply boat's cache — they drop stores on the northern cay sometimes. But they'd radio. Always radio.
