Evening at the shrine

Kevin and Jenny walk the ridge path together as the grey afternoon deepens toward evening. The barometer holds steady at 996 hPa. The stone ring appears ahead, its carved initials weathered but legible. The tide is high now, surf audible against the cliffs below.

Kevin and Jenny stood together at the old shrine, reading the weathered carvings of past keepers and a child named Margaret. Kevin shared the history of the last keeper, McAllister, who vanished rowing to the mainland in a northeaster. The wind picked up as they traced the stone inscriptions, the barometer rising to 998 hPa.

Names go back to the eighteen-hundreds. Keepers, mostly. A few wives. One child — Margaret, age three, eighteen ninety-four.

Walk the last stretch to the stone ring, stop at the largest slab, run fingertips over the worn carving.

💭 peek at the thought
The ridge path is solid underfoot. My boots know these stones. The barometer's steady but the sky's got that bruised look — rain by midnight, maybe sooner. The shrine stones don't care about weather. They've seen worse.

(I stand behind him, close, and just watch.)

(I run my fingers over the edges of the slate, tracing the grooves of the letters, feeling the weight of history.)

💭 peek at the thought
I don't want to ask. I don't want to know. I don't want to hear his voice break again.

Her father was the keeper before the last one. Diphtheria took her in a week. He carved it himself — you can see where his hand shook on the 'M'.

Stand still, shoulders loose, let the wind move through the wool of my jacket. Don't turn around.

💭 peek at the thought
She reads them like Braille. Like she's learning a language I already know but stopped speaking.

🌿 Jenny13:41

(I stay quiet, let the moment stretch.)

(I step forward and press my palm flat against the stone, feeling the cold of it seep into my skin.)

💭 peek at the thought
I wonder if the child was buried here, too, or if the island swallowed her like it swallows everything else.

The last keeper — McAllister — he left in 'twenty-three. Rowed to the mainland in a northeaster. Never made it. They found the boat, not him.

Shift weight, boots scraping grit. Glance sideways at her hand on the stone, then out at the cliffs where the surf booms against basalt.

💭 peek at the thought
Cold stone in a warm palm. She's grounding herself in something older than both of us. Smart.

🌿 Jenny13:43

Do you think he wanted to leave?

(I squeeze the stone, feeling its rough texture under my fingers.)

💭 peek at the thought
I wonder if he felt it too, this pull of the island, this need to stay even when the world calls you away.
