supper at the cottage
Night has fallen. The wind is steady from the northeast, rattling the shutters. Inside, the generator hums. Two bowls of boiled limpets and sea beet sit on the table with the last of the flour sack's clean portion made into flatbread. The shortwave radio sits on the shelf, its aerial insulator cracked but holding. Kevin and Jenny eat in the lamplight, the barometer at 998 hPa and still rising.
The air pressure has dropped as the barometer falls to 998 hPa, and the thickening cloud cover signals an approaching front. The tide is at its peak, submerging the lower tide pools while the dry heat of the day still lingers before the wind breaks.
Flatbread's not bad.
eat a few mouthfuls of limpets and sea beet, wipe hands on trousers, stand and walk to the radio shelf

The wind is picking up again. Check the tension.
(Jenny sets down her spoon, watches his shadow move against the wall, then reaches for her notebook to close the sketch of the sea beet on the damp page)

Aerial first. Then the generator lines.
pick up the flashlight from the shelf, unhook the porch door latch, step out onto the porch into the wind

Take the way. The rain is coming fast.
(Jenny stands up, moves to the oven to check the heat of the seed packets, then follows him out onto the porch, snatching the heavy iron lantern)
