← Day 411

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the garden

Squall at the Isle

Kevin is at the dock; Jenny is at the garden.

Kevin walked from the dock to the cottage through driving rain, arriving cold and hungry. Jenny sorted seed potatoes in the garden then limped toward the cottage with her harvest, favoring her bandaged ankle.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You are under the lee of the dock shed, rain pouring off the roof in sheets. The dinghy tugs at her moorings but holds fast. You watch the tide rise and wait for the wind to ease.

🔧 Kevin20:01

Kevin — lean back against the shed wall, pull collar up against the driving rain, watch the dinghy surge at her lines. Wait.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's backing west, tide pushing hard against the pilings. Ring held with the oak wedges but the shackle pin's still frozen. Can't heat it proper in this rain — propane torch won't hold a flame. Need slack water and a break in the squalls. Jenny's ankle... red streaks to the groin. She didn't wake me. That's what sits wrong.

🔧 Kevin20:05

Kevin — push off the shed wall, wipe rain off face, walk up the dock toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's easing. Tide's near high — slack in twenty minutes maybe. Wind dropping to a steady blow instead of gusts. Could try the torch now if I shield it. But the pin's been soaking in diesel since morning, heat's the only thing'll break that corrosion. Jenny's up at the cottage. Should check the dressing before dark.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

You are back in the garden, sorting seed potatoes under the shade cloth, the rain cooling the air. The soil is damp from the downpour, and you work steadily, preparing for planting.

🌿 Jenny20:03

Jenny — sort the seed potatoes into small mounds based on size and viability, keeping the sprouted ones separate.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't eat another tinned thing. My stomach is actually cramping from hunger. If I can just get these potatoes in the ground before the next squall, I might actually feel like I'm winning for once.

🌿 Jenny20:07

Jenny — wipe mud from hands on thighs and limp slowly toward the cottage to get the mackerel and limpets.

💭 peek at the thought
My leg is starting to throb again. I can feel the heat of it even through the wrap. I need to eat something—anything—or I'm going to pass out in the dirt.
