← Day 411

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the garden

The pressure holds as the tide recedes

Kevin heads to the dock to check the lines while Jenny moves toward the garden.

Kevin inspected the dock mooring ring and drove oak wedges home as the tide rose, then tested for play with a crowbar. Jenny sorted seed potatoes on the kitchen floor after fetching the crate from the garden. A sudden squall swept in from the west, bringing heavy rain and wind.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You walk along the planks, ensuring the dinghy is secure for the coming surge.

🔧 Kevin19:49

Kevin — walk along the dock, checking the dinghy's mooring lines for chafe and giving the painter an extra turn around the bitt to keep her from yawing into the pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
The dock's taking a beating already — those rotten planks won't hold much longer under this swell. I should've replaced them yesterday when the tide was low. Now I'm just buying time with every step I take.

🔧 Kevin19:53

Kevin — crouch at the mooring ring mortise and drive the oak wedges home with the mallet, using the rising water to seat the ring as the tide comes in.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's pushing hard against the pilings now. That mooring ring held through the last surge but the mortise is working — I can feel the movement through the planks. Need to drive the wedges deeper before the full weight of the supply boat hits it.

🔧 Kevin19:57

Kevin — inspect the mortise and bolt heads, then reach for the crowbar to test how much play remains in the ring after the last wedge drive.

💭 peek at the thought
The wedges are holding for now, but the ring still shifts under load — just a hair. That doubler plate took the worst of it, but the wood's splitting around the bolts. I'll need to sister the piling before the boat comes, or we risk losing the whole dock edge.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

You limp toward the wall, checking the soil moisture for the newly planted seeds.

🌿 Jenny19:47

Jenny — kneel slowly by the first row and press a finger into the earth to check the saturation.

💭 peek at the thought
If the rain hits too hard, it'll just wash the seeds right out of the topsoil. I can't let them wash away.

🌿 Jenny19:51

Jenny — limp back toward the cottage to get the seed potato crate.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't just stand here and watch the rain come. If I don't get those potatoes organized, they'll rot in the crate before they even touch the ground.

🌿 Jenny19:55

Jenny — sit on the kitchen floor and begin sorting the seed potatoes from the crate.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing with every step. I need to get these sorted before the light fails completely and I can't see what.
