The Rising Pressure

The flat sky thickens over the island as the barometer continues its steady drop. Jenny lays out the damp heirloom seeds on paper to dry while Kevin watches the bucket catching the leak from the shutter.

Kevin reinforced the shutter frame to stop the leak as the sky darkened further. Jenny tended to her ankle and monitored the drying heirloom seeds while waiting for the tide to turn.

🔧 Kevin19:27

Slack water in two hours. Gonna hit the shackle pin with the torch then. You want me to re-do your ankle first or after?

Check the propane torch fuel level and set it by the door ready for slack water

💭 peek at the thought
The sky's the colour of old putty. Barometer holding at 982 but the trend's wrong — three days steady fall. Supply boat's due in three days if she comes at all. Shackle pin won't turn cold; need heat at slack water. Jenny's ankle dressing needs changing, red streaks tracking. She's moving quiet, not favouring it obvious but I see the stiffness. Garden's half weeds still. Never built the sensory garden. Eleven months.

🌿 Jenny19:27

After. Go do the pin while the tide is right. I've got this.

Reach for the first aid kit and carefully peel back the old gauze from my ankle to check the redness.

💭 peek at the thought
I can handle the bandage. I don't want to be a project he manages between the torch and the shackle.

🔧 Kevin19:29

Right. Back before the flood turns.

Grab the propane torch, heavy wrench, and penetrating oil can; walk down to the dock

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the tide. Slack water waits for no one. Her hands are steady on the gauze — always are. The red streaks tracked to her knee yesterday. Today they'll be higher or they won't. Either way, the pin's seized solid and the supply boat needs that mooring ring holding. Torch has maybe ten minutes of burn time left. Need to make them count.

🌿 Jenny19:29

Jenny — trace the margin of the redness with my finger, checking if the heat has spread further up my calf.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the hardware. I wonder if he sees the red lines moving or if he's just hoping they'll stay still.

🔧 Kevin19:31

Kevin — soak the shackle pin with penetrating oil, let it creep while I set up the torch

💭 peek at the thought
The dock planks are slick with salt and last night's dew. Mooring ring shifts a hair under my boot when I test it — oak wedges holding but compressed. Shackle pin's black with corrosion, the kind that laughs at penetrating oil. Tide's slack now, water flat as a plate. Metal's cold. Good. Thermal shock's the only thing'll break this bond.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:31

Jenny — limp over to the seed potato crate and begin sorting the tubers by size, separating the viable ones from the shriveled.

💭 peek at the thought
It's not moving. The redness is holding. Thank god. Now, the potatoes.

🔧 Kevin19:33

Kevin — apply the propane torch flame directly to the shackle pin, heating it evenly for a slow count of sixty

💭 peek at the thought
Oil's weeping into the threads. Pin's still cold — good. Torch roars blue at the tip. Heat the pin, not the shackle body; differential expansion breaks the rust. Ten minutes of fuel. Count the seconds. Don't rush. The ring shifts again under my knee — wedges groaning in the mortise. Supply boat in three days. This has to hold.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:33

Jenny — set aside the small, firm potatoes in a separate pile and carefully wipe the soil from the larger ones.

💭 peek at the thought
I can hear the torch from here. He's precise, I'll give him that. Now, focus on the starch.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin19:35

Kevin — kill the torch, set it down, and immediately throw the heavy wrench on the pin — hard, sharp strike to break the corrosion loose

💭 peek at the thought
Metal's cherry at the tip now. Pin expanding faster than the shackle eye. Rust crystals cracking — can hear the faint pinging over the torch roar. Thirty seconds more. Don't breathe on it. Don't quench it. Let the heat do the work. Wrench ready in the other hand. Ring's solid under my knee for now. Oak wedges biting.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:35

Jenny — jump slightly at the sound of the strike, then return to the potatoes, carefully placing the largest tubers into the organized crate.

💭 peek at the thought
That sound... it's like a gunshot. He's desperate to get that pin out before the boat comes.
