Approaching Storm

The first heavy drops of rain hit the roof as Kevin and Jenny gather inside. The wind picks up, rattling the newly repaired shutters.

Kevin inspected Jenny's ankle while she ate, noting that the red streaks had not progressed but showed no signs of improvement. Jenny redressed the wound as they discussed the approaching storm and the upcoming supply boat.

🌿 Jenny19:37

There it is. Right on cue.

Limp inside and lean against the kitchen table, glancing toward the window.

💭 peek at the thought
Finally. The air was getting too heavy to breathe. I hope the garden tarp holds.

🔧 Kevin19:37

Kettle on?

walk to the wood stove and fill the kettle from the tank tap

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's here. She's favoring the ankle more than she lets on. Need to get that dressing changed before the antibiotics wear thin.

🌿 Jenny19:39

Yes, please. And I'll get the mackerel.

Slowly push off the table and hobble toward the cupboard to retrieve the tinned mackerel.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't just sit here while he does everything. I need to feel useful, even if I'm shaking.

🔧 Kevin19:39

Right.

set the kettle on the stove and pull the first aid kit from the shelf

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slower than yesterday. The streaks haven't faded. I'll check the ankle while the water heats — less argument that way.

🌿 Jenny19:41

Give me ten minutes to eat first. I'm starving.

Set the tin of mackerel and the bowl of limpets on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
Not yet. I just want to eat. I can't think about the redness and the gauze until I have some protein in me.

🔧 Kevin19:41

Ten minutes.

sit at the table and open the mackerel tin with the knife

💭 peek at the thought
Ten minutes. She'll eat, I'll watch the ankle, then I'll do the dressing whether she's ready or not. The streaks were tracking up yesterday — can't wait on this.

🌿 Jenny19:43

Thank you.

Sit down heavily in the chair and start eating the mackerel with a fork.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so efficient it's almost mechanical. I wonder if he's actually worried or if he's just following a manual.

🔧 Kevin19:43

Mind if I have a look while you eat? Just to see how it's sitting.

lean forward slightly, keeping my voice low and steady, eyes on her ankle beneath the tablecloth edge

💭 peek at the thought
She's eating slow, favoring the left side. The red streaks — I saw them last night, still there. If they've crept higher since yesterday, we're out of time.

🌿 Jenny19:45

Go ahead. Just... don't tell me it looks worse.

Shift my leg slightly to give him better access, though I keep my eyes on my food.

💭 peek at the thought
He can't stop being the caretaker for one second. It's like he's monitoring a gauge on the engine.

🔧 Kevin19:45

It's holding. Not worse. Not better either.

gently lift the trouser leg and peel back the dressing edge, checking the wound margins and the red streaks tracking toward the knee, then re-cover it quick

💭 peek at the thought
She knows. She's known since yesterday. I peel back the gauze slow — swollen, hot, the streaks still tracking up the calf, angry red fingers reaching. No pus, no blackening. Not yet. But the heat in it... metronidazole and doxycycline should've knocked this back by now.
