Morning coffee and tide watch

Kevin and Jenny sit on the porch while the clouds thickens over the flat sky. Jenny de-salts the notebook on the table while Kevin checks the rising barometer.

The sky thickens over Sorrel Island, the air heavy with the coming wet season rain. The tide is steadily rising, lapping at the lower garden beds and beginning to cover the crevice in the rock shelf.

🔧 Kevin23:33

Barometer's rising fast. Looks like we're past the worst of it.

Walk to the rain tank, tap it to check the level, then glance at the flooded garden beds.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's up to 991 and still climbing — good sign, but I won't trust it till it holds. Garden's underwater, heirloom seeds are at risk. Need to check the mooring ring at high water, then get on the radio for Tom. Jenny's quiet, de-salting that notebook like it's the only thing keeping her sane. I should say something about the evacuation line. Not now. Later.

🌿 Jenny23:35

It's a mess. The beds are holding too much water.

Reach for the ballpoint pen and carefully mark the current edge of the red lines on my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The garden is a swamp. If the soil stays this saturated, the root systems will suffocate before I even get the seeds in.

🔧 Kevin23:35

We'll trench the low side at low tide. Let it drain to the beach.

Lean against the porch rail, watching the garden. Reach for the tin mug of mackerel on the table, eat a bite.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the beds are drowning. Lime helped the pH but nothing helps standing water this deep. The red lines on her ankle haven't moved past the mark. That's something. She's marking them herself now, methodical. Good. Means she's watching.

🌿 Jenny23:37

We'll need a deeper channel, or the sea beet will just turn to mush.

Sketch the current state of the garden in the notebook, noting where the water is pooling.

💭 peek at the thought
Trenching would help, but I don't have the strength to dig in that clay today without collapsing.

🔧 Kevin23:38

Clay pan at the south end. We cut a V-trench, line it with the old roof tiles from the shed. Holds shape, drains fast.

Finish the mackerel, wipe fingers on a rag. Stand, stretch the shoulder that's been stiff since the dock repair. Walk to the garden's edge, boot sinking in mud, eye the ground for the natural fall.

💭 peek at the thought
Sea beet's tough but not that tough. A deeper channel means cutting through the clay pan at the garden's edge — hard work, but doable. She's sketching it out, thinking ahead. That's Jenny. Plans while the water rises.

🌿 Jenny23:39

Just don't over-drain it. Some of those species need the damp.

Set the notebook aside and slowly stand up, favoring the infected ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's already calculating the angles and the materials. He thinks everything is a problem to be solved with a trench and a tile.

🔧 Kevin23:39

I'll stop at the sand layer. Won't touch the upper beds.

Crouch at the garden's low corner, scrape mud aside with a boot heel to find the clay line. Glance back at her on the porch — watch how she weights the good leg.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the Carex and the saltmarsh grasses need wet feet. Over-drain and we lose the transect species. She's moving slow, testing the ankle. No limp she can't hide, but she's hiding it. The pen mark's still the boundary. Infection's held.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny23:41

I'm fine, Kevin.

Carefully sit back down in the chair and reach for the first aid kit to prepare a fresh dressing.

💭 peek at the thought
He's watching me. He can see the limp even when I try to hide it.
