Evening radio watch and supper

Kevin and Jenny are back in the kitchen. The stove is lit, a pot of water heating for the sea beet. Kevin has the shortwave radio on the table, the aerial wire running out the window to the mast. The barometer still reads 999 hPa. It's nearly 2000, time for the scheduled call.

Kevin re-lashed the wind generator spar with new half-inch three-strand rope and wedged the splitting mast step with hardwood shims, securing it before the epoxy failed. Jenny checked the rain tank gauge, confirming 391 litres, then returned to the cottage as the front darkened the sky.

Twenty hundred hours. Radio schedule.

sit at the kitchen table with the radio, adjust the squelch, key the microphone — "Victor Kilo Four November Bravo, Victor Kilo Four November Bravo, standing by on schedule" — release the key and listen

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer hasn't moved all day. Front's stalled. Good for the radio — less static. Time to key up on Tom's frequency. Same as always. Just the call sign.

Copy that, Kevin. Standing by.

Sit at the table, watch the water bubble in the pot, and wait for the static.

💭 peek at the thought
I hope the boat is actually coming in two days; the barometer is dropping and I am getting tired of the silence.

🔧 Kevin14:42

Nothing heard. Closing schedule.

key the mic — "Victor Kilo Four November Bravo, clear" — set the microphone down, pull the pot off the stove, pour the hot water over the sea beet in the bowl

💭 peek at the thought
Static only. Same as every night for eleven months. Thumb on the key. Could say more. Never do.

🌿 Jenny14:44

Copy. I'll be on the air again next week.

Lean over the steam, smelling the bitter greens, and look at the sketch of the succulents.

💭 peek at the thought
Another week of nothing but static and the smell of salt.

🔧 Kevin14:45

Sea beet's done. Eat while it's hot.

slide the bowl across the table, take the other for myself, sit and eat with the radio humming low behind us

💭 peek at the thought
She says it every week. Part of the ritual. Like I say clear. Like the barometer says 999.

🌿 Jenny14:47

Thanks.

Take a bite, way the way leaf, and watch the clouds darken over the island.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is warm, but the air in the room is getting heavy.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin14:47

Front's coming in. Need to check the spar lashings and the mast step before dark.

finish the sea beet, set the bowl aside, pull on my boots and oilskin, step out onto the porch to look at the wind generator spar against the sky

💭 peek at the thought
Cloud's lowering. Rain by midnight. Mast step still split. Spar epoxy still tacky. Two things that'll fail if this blows hard.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:50

I'll check the rain tank level while you're out there.

Walk to the back of the cottage, touch the cold metal of the 400-litre tank, and check the gauge.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; that wind is going to be mean tonight.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin14:51

Tank's at three-ninety-one. Spar's working loose. Mast step split's wider. Going to re-lash the spar and wedge the step with hardwood shims before the epoxy gives completely.

climb the ladder to the wind generator platform, untie the existing lashings, wrap new turns of the half-inch three-strand around the spar and mast step, cinch them down with a timber hitch and two half-hitches, then descend to fetch the cr

💭 peek at the thought
Spar's moving in the gusts. Lashings creaking. Mast step split's opened another millimetre — can see daylight through the epoxy line. Doubler plate's holding but the wood's working loose around the bolts. Three, maybe four hours before this hits proper.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny14:53

Need help with the shims?

Follow Kevin out to the tool shed, grab the crowbar and a wedge.

💭 peek at the thought
I knew that epoxy wouldn't last.
