Radio call and storm preparation

Kevin sits at the radio desk in the cottage, headset on, transmitting the eighth scheduled call on Tom's frequency. Jenny sits nearby with her notebook, logging the transmission. The barometer reads 976 hPa and falling. Wind is picking up from the northeast, rattling the shutter.

Kevin and Jenny inspected the dock as the pressure continued to drop before the approaching storm. They checked the mooring ring and the dinghy's lines against the rising tide, then decided to head to the shrine on the ridge before the weather turned.

Tom, it's Kev. Eighth call. Position unchanged. Sorrel Island. Barometer nine-seven-six and falling. Northeast thirty, gusting fifty. Rain horizontal. Dock fastenings held at low tide — oak wedges, greenheart shim, collar clamp torqued. Mooring ring loose in mortise, needs attention before supply boat. She's steady. I'm still here. Over.

keep headset on, wait through the static for any reply, watch the barometer needle

💭 peek at the thought
Eight calls. Eight times I've said the same thing into static. Barometer's at 976 and dropping — this isn't just a blow, it's a proper system settling in. The dock held at low tide but the mooring ring's still loose in its mortise. If the surge hits the way the glass says it will, that ring's the weak link. Jenny's logging it all neat in her book like it matters. Like he'll hear it.

It's dropping too fast, Kev.

Write "976 hPa / NE 30-50 / Falling" in the notebook and glance toward the porch door.

💭 peek at the thought
976. That's too low. The wind is shifting exactly how the logs predicted. The surge is coming.

🔧 Kevin07:54

Aye. Fastest drop I've seen since Biscay.

pull the headset off, stand, walk to the porch door and brace a shoulder against the frame to check the wind direction against the compass rose on the door jamb

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Two millibars since the last time I looked. That's not a front passing — that's a deepening low parking itself on top of us. The shutter's already rattling. If the wind backs another ten degrees it'll funnel straight up the inlet and put the dock under the kind of load the oak wedges weren't made for.

🌿 Jenny07:55

Check the lines again. The tide is already turning.

Stand up, wincing at my ankle, and move toward the kitchen to grab the heavy flashlight.

💭 peek at the thought
If the surge hits the dock, the dinghy's at risk. I need to make sure the lines are high.

🔧 Kevin07:56

On it.

grab the oilskins off the peg by the door, pull them on over my shirt, clip the flashlight to my belt, and head out onto the porch toward the dock

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the left ankle still. Doxy's been in her system eighteen hours — should be knocking the infection back but the joint's stiff with the pressure. She won't say it hurts. The tide turning means the mooring ring takes load different now — water pushing under the dock, lifting on the pilings. If the mortise works loose another millimetre the doubler plate bolts take the shear. They're stainless, they'll hold. The timber won't.

🌿 Jenny07:57

Don't let the surge catch you on the slipway!

Walk slowly to the porch door and lean against the frame, watching him head for the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going out there in this? He's too stubborn for his own good. I can't follow him with this ankle, but I can't just sit here.

🔧 Kevin07:58

I know the slipway, Jen.

step down onto the dock boards, testing each one before committing weight, moving toward the mooring ring at the seaward end

💭 peek at the thought
She doesn't need to tell me. The slipway's green with algae at the waterline — one wrong step with a surge running and I'm in the drink. Forty minutes in Biscay water taught me more about cold shock than any manual. The ring's the job. Wedges held at low. High tide with this wind behind it is a different animal.

🌿 Jenny07:59

Watch the stern line! It's pulling hard.

Grip the porch railing and watch the water swell under the pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
The boards are going to be slick. If he slips and hits his head, the island will take him anyway.
