Evening arrival at the ridge

Kevin and Jenny stand among the stone circle as the wind picks up from the northeast. The barometer continues to drop as the first drops of rain fall.

Kevin and Jenny descended from the old shrine toward the cottage as the air pressure continued to drop. Jenny struggled with the slick roots and her injured ankle, requiring Kevin to help steady her. They reached the cottage just as the overcast clouds threatened to break in.

🌿 Jenny08:01

We need to go. Now.

Glance at the weathered stones one last time, then turn and start limping back toward the ridge path.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is plummeting. Northeast wind and falling glass—the dock is going to take a beating if we aren't careful.

🔧 Kevin08:01

Right behind you.

Walk the stone circle once more, fingertips brushing the carved names — checking the 'E' stone and the softwood scrap beside it — then follow Jenny down the ridge path toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's backing northeast and the barometer's still dropping. She's right — we need to move before the ridge path turns treacherous. But I'm not leaving without checking the stones one more time.

🌿 Jenny08:03

Stay close. The path is going to get slick.

Clutch the notebook to my chest to keep the sketches dry, stepping carefully over the roots while favoring my throbbing ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up too fast. If I don't get the dinghy double down, the surge will take the mast.

🔧 Kevin08:03

I'm right here. Take your time on the roots.

Fall in a step behind her on the descent, scanning the trail for loose stone and wet root mats, ready to steady her if she slips.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slower than she'll admit. The ankle's worse than she let on at noon. I should take the lead on the steep sections — let her set pace on the flats.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:05

We don't have time to be slow.

Quicken the pace despite the pain, eyes fixed on the cottage roof at the bottom of the hill.

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't understand the speed of this front. The tide doesn't wait for "taking your time."

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:05

Cottage isn't going anywhere.

Lengthen stride to match her pace on the descent, weight balanced over the balls of my feet, one hand free at her elbow level — close enough to grab, far enough not to crowd.

💭 peek at the thought
She's pushing too hard. The ankle won't hold at this pace on wet ground. But calling her out now just makes her dig in. I'll match her speed and be ready to catch her.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:07

Just help me with the lines when we get back.

Wince as a particularly slick root catches my boot, the edge of the notebook digging into my ribs.

💭 peek at the thought
The way might stay, but the boat might not. If the lines snap, I'm stranded with this infection.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:07

Done. You take the 0600 call tomorrow.

Step in close on the next slick section, shoulder bracing her weight for two strides until the footing firms up, then fall back half a pace.

💭 peek at the thought
She's asking for the dinghy lines and the dock warps — the storm prep we didn't finish. Fair trade. I'll take the heavy work if she keeps the radio watch.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:09

I'll check the tank first.

major a smear of grit from the notebook cover with my sleeve and keep moving down the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
0600 is too late if the surge hits at midnight. I need to see the water level first.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin08:09

Generator's topped off. Oil can too.

Keep pace on the lower slope, eyes alternating between her ankles and the cottage roof growing larger through the rain, the path levelling out ahead.

💭 peek at the thought
Tank check means she's thinking water for the generator and the head — practical. Good. Means she's still thinking ahead.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny08:10

Good. I want the lanterns lit the second we're inside.

Step off the trail and onto the grass, heading for the cottage porch.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focusing on the fuel while the barometer is screaming. The generator is fine; it's the mooring ring that's the gamble.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin08:10

Matches are on the mantle. I'll get the stove going.

Follow her onto the porch, shake off the worst of the wet, step inside and strike the storm lantern first — wick trimmed yesterday — then the kitchen stove, feeding it dry kindling from the box by the hearth.

💭 peek at the thought
Lanterns lit means she wants the cottage warm and dry before the power cuts. Storm's close now — rain's coming sideways.
