Evening meal and radio watch

Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table with tin mugs of limpet broth and corned beef. The shortwave radio is on, static hissing through the new porcelain insulator. Kevin has the medevac forms clipped to the ditch bag by the door. Outside, the tide is high and the wind has dropped to nothing.

Kevin confirmed the radio was transmitting but receiving only heavy static, likely due to a compromised ground stake at the garden frame. Jenny inspected the heirloom seed tin and found the seeds damp but viable, while managing her infected ankle with antibiotics and rest.

🌿 Jenny01:24

Check the radio one more time, Kevin. The static sounds too heavy.

Takes a slow sip of the broth, wincing as the movement brushes against the bandage.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping again; if the boat doesn't come in three days, this infection is going to climb higher than my calf.

🔧 Kevin01:24

Aye. Give me a minute.

set mug down, stand, walk to radio shelf, adjust RF gain and squelch, key mic, say "Sorrel Island caretaker station, radio check, over", release mic, listen

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the static — heavier than it should be with the new insulator. Could be atmospherics from the low that passed, or the coax run I jury-rigged to the garden frame ground. Either way, the supply boat's due in three days and I need to raise them clean.

🌿 Jenny01:25

It's not just static. It sounds like the island is talking back.

Reaches for the seed tin, tracing the dent in the metal where my own dropped it years ago.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the machine he doesn't notice the air is changing color.

🔧 Kevin01:25

Not the island. The feed line. Ground stake at the garden frame might be eaten.

unclip mic, unscrew BNC on spare coax at radio end, inspect center pin and shield contact, sniff for ozone or burnt plastic

💭 peek at the thought
She hears it too. That low harmonic underneath the hiss — not atmospherics. The coax shield's still continuity-failed on the old run, but the new spare coax to the garden frame ground should've bypassed it. Unless the ground stake's corroded or the BNC's letting in RF. Or the insulator's hairline cracked again under the tape.

🌿 Jenny01:27

I'll check it when the rain stops. My leg won't let me today.

Shifts weight to the good ankle, breathing through the pain as the heat pulses in the calf.

💭 peek at the thought
If the ground stake is gone, the whole system is just an antenna for the storm.

🔧 Kevin01:27

You stay off it. I'll go at first light. Supply boat needs clean comms.

screw BNC back on, set mic in clip, sit back down, lift mug, drink broth slow

💭 peek at the thought
She shouldn't be climbing the garden frame with that leg. Not today, not until the infection's properly gone. I'll go at first light — check the ground stake, the BNC, the coax run. If the insulator's cracked again I'll know by the SWR reading. For now, radio's usable on receive. Supply boat's the priority.

🌿 Jenny01:29

Just make sure the boat actually comes this time. The salt is getting into everything.

Opens the seed tin, checking the moisture levels of the grandmother's seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
First light is too far away when the barometer is falling this fast.

🔧 Kevin01:29

They'll come. Three days. Window's open.

set mug down, reach for notebook on table, flip to supply boat contact page, check last ETA entry

💭 peek at the thought
Three days. Barometer steady at 981, wind dead — that's the window. But I've watched supply boats turn back or never show. The ditch bag's packed, medevac forms ready, heirloom tin sealed. If they come, we decide. If they don't, we hold. Salt in the flour, salt in the seed packets, salt in the radio coax, salt in the Yanmar's cooling passages. Salt in the wound on her ankle. Salt in the letter to Tom sitting in the radio box.
