Night Watch
Rain hammers the cottage roof. The radio sits silent on the shelf, the new ground stake holding. Jenny lies on the sofa, ankle elevated, the seed tin sealed beside her. Kevin checks the barometer — 981 hPa, steady — then the ditch bag clipped to the dinghy's forward eye. The supply boat is due in three days. The tide is high and the island is quiet except for the rain.
The warm rain continues its steady rhythmic drumming against the cottage roof, carrying the scent of damp earth and salt. Outside, the tide is retreating rapidly, exposing slick rocks and the beginning of the path to the tide pools. Inside, the air is heavy with the smell of drying sea beet and the metallic tang of the Yanmar parts sitting on the table.
Kevin — walk to the porch and check the ditch bag lashings on the dinghy, then return to the kitchen to heat water for coffee

Is the water still on?
Reach for the seed tin and rub the surface of the metal, checking for any new moisture.

Tank's full. Spring screen was clear at low tide. I'll check it again at slack.
fill the kettle from the tank tap and set it on the wood stove, then pull out two tin mugs

Don't wait until slack. The rain is getting too heavy.
Wince as I shift my weight, pressing a hand against the throbbing calf to dull the pain.
