The Eve of the Storm

The sky turns deep purple as the first heavy gusts hit the island. You and Jenny meet inside as the rain begins to rattle the shutters.

The sky thickens to a bruised purple, the air air heavy with the scent of coming rain. The tide is high, waves lapping hungrily at the newly reinforced dock pilings. Inside the cottage, the leak from the shutter begins a steady drip into the galvanized bucket, marking the encroaching storm.

🔧 Kevin03:05

Shutters held. Radio aerial's still up. You want first watch or second?

Check the porch door latch is fully engaged, then move to the kitchen window to watch the dock through the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's shifted. Coming in hard from the southwest — straight up the channel. Barometer's been dropping all day and now it's showing. We battened what we could but the dock's still the weak point. If the mooring ring pulls, the supply boat can't land tomorrow. And if it pulls bad, we lose the finger pier entirely.

🌿 Jenny03:07

First watch. I need to see if the light is on the horizon.

pull a chair up to the window and rest my swollen ankle on a stool, watching the way hit the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come tomorrow, this infection is going to win before I can plant any of these seeds.

🔧 Kevin03:07

Wake me if the ring moves. Or if you see anything.

Pull the wool blanket from the bed and settle into the chair opposite the stove, boots off, knife in reach, facing the window.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching for the supply boat's running lights. Two days early would be a miracle. Two days late is normal. But she's watching the dock too — the way the pilings take each hit. Smart. The ankle's keeping her off her feet and she's making it count.

🌿 Jenny03:09

I'll wake you. Just try to sleep.

reach for the sea beet sketches and carefully wipe a grain of salt from the paper with a dry cloth.

💭 peek at the thought
way thinks the knife is for the storm outside, but the real threat is the red line creeping up my calf.

🔧 Kevin03:09

Kevin — close my eyes. Breathe slow. Listen to the structure — cottage timbers, dock timbers, wind in the rigging — sorting each sound into place.

💭 peek at the thought
She won't sleep either. Not with the wind climbing and the dock taking that kind of punishment. But she'll sit there with those sketches and the radio quiet and she'll wait. That's what she does. I should've built the windbreak proper. Should've sistered the landward pilings last month when the tide was right. Too late now.

🌿 Jenny03:11

I'm okay.

shift my weight off the ankle and wince, looking at the barometer drop.

💭 peek at the thought
The silence between us is heavier than the storm clouds.

🔧 Kevin03:11

Take the metro. Now. Water's on the stove.

Reach for the first aid kit on the shelf, palm the metronidazole blister pack, hold it out without looking — keeping my eyes closed, staying in the rest.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not okay. Ankle's hot, tracking's past the calf now. She's been on it all day moving seed trays, battening tarps, hauling water. The doxycycline's only had twelve hours. Metronidazole's still in the pack. She won't take it unless I make her. Stubborn as the dock ring.

🌿 Jenny03:13

Thanks.

reach out, take the pills, and swallow them with a long gulp of lukewarm water from the mug.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always right about the timing, and it hurts to have to admit it.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin03:13

Kevin — let the silence stretch. Track the cottage's movement in my bones — the slight flex of the south wall, the stove pipe's metal whisper, the rain's changing pitch on the roof. Sleep pulling at the edges.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. That's good. Five tablets left after this. Course finishes in three days if she doesn't miss any. Infection's got no business spreading with both antibiotics onboard. Wind's steadying — gusts settling into a sustained blow. Dock's taking it rhythmic now. That's better than the snatch-loads.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:15

I'm staying up.

run my hand over the tin of seeds, feeling the cold metal through the paper.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come tomorrow, I'm going to use the radio regardless of the battery.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin03:15

Wake me in four hours. That's an order.

Shift in the chair, boots hitting the floorboards, and stand — knife sliding into belt sheath, blanket draped over the chair back.

💭 peek at the thought
She'll stay up all night if I let her. Sketches, seeds, radio, dock watch — she'll run herself hollow and call it duty. The ankle needs elevation, not a stool. The leg needs rest, not tension. But she won't lie down while the wind blows and I'm asleep. She thinks she's the only one who can watch.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:17

Four hours. Go.

watch him move to the bedroom, then turn back to the sketches.

💭 peek at the thought
Four own isn't enough time if the fever spikes, but he needs the sleep.
