The First Squall

The wind picks up significantly and the first heavy drops of rain hit the dust. You meet Jenny inside the cottage as the shutter rattles in its frame.

Kevin checked the dock mooring ring as the tide rose, securing the loose fitting with additional oak wedges. Jenny stayed at the cottage, monitoring the falling barometer and preparing the heirloom seeds for the supply boat's arrival.

🌿 Jenny02:55

The barometer is at ninety-eight-one. It's going to blow.

Walk to the table and pull the sea beet sketches away from the damp.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if that boat doesn't show tomorrow, we're trapped in a gale.

🔧 Kevin02:57

Dock ring's holding with the oak wedges. But the north piling's sinking. Need to check the shims at low water.

walk to the porch and pull on my oilskin jacket

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Barometer's dropped six millibars since this morning. Wind's backing west. Need to double the dinghy lines and check the dock ring before the tide turns — the surge comes faster than the forecast says.

🌿 Jenny02:58

The tide's too high for the shims. Wait for the swell to break.

Trace the red line on my leg with a trembling finger, checking for heat.

💭 peek at the thought
If he goes out in that surge, the current will take him before he even reaches the dock.

🔧 Kevin02:59

Swell breaks at the turn. Two hours. I'll check the piling then.

pull my boot back on and lace it tight

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the infection track, not the tide. The red line hasn't moved past the knee in twelve hours. Antibiotics are holding. But she's using the leg as an excuse to keep me off the dock.

🌿 Jenny02:59

Don't go out alone. The tide is too fast.

Sit at the kitchen table and open the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's stubborn. He thinks he can fix the island while the world falls apart.

🔧 Kevin03:01

I'm not swimming. Just the piling. Two hours.

check the dinghy's stern spring one more time through the porch window

💭 peek at the thought
She's not asking. She's stating. The seed tin clicks open — tomato, pepper, basil packets neat in their rows. She counts them like prayer beads. The wind hits the porch shutter hard enough to rattle the glass.

🌿 Jenny03:01

The barometer is falling too fast. Just wait for the turn.

Sketch the morphology of the sea beet on the edge of the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
If he goes and the tide shifts, I'll be the one writing the report.

🔧 Kevin03:03

Radio check at 0400. I'll key the mic.

pour coffee into the tin mug and set it on the table beside her sketches

💭 peek at the thought
Ninety-eight-one and dropping. Wind's steady west now, not backing. She's drawing salt glands on the notebook margin — microscopic work with a blunt pencil, hands steady. The pencil doesn't shake. My leg doesn't throb. The dock ring held the last surge. The north piling's greenheart shim held at low water. But the barometer says the real blow hasn't arrived.

🌿 Jenny03:03

The battery is dead, Kevin. You know that.

Trace the red line on my leg again, watching the pulse.

💭 peek at the thought
If the radio doesn't work, I'm just talking to a ghost.

🔧 Kevin03:05

Crank works. Shoulder holds.

rub the heel of my hand over the old injury in my shoulder, unconscious

💭 peek at the thought
The battery's been dead since the storm took the aerial insulator. She knows. I know. The radio receives fine — Fiji freighter came through clear at 0400. But transmit needs power the dead battery can't give. The hand-crank on the side of the set works, if your shoulder holds. Mine does. Most days.
