Pre-storm Prep

The overcast sky darkens as the first heavy drops of rain hit the dust. You meet inside the cottage to secure the gear before the gale truly hits.

Kevin checked the dinghy's mooring lines for fraying while the tide was still low. Jenny secured the garden tarps against the increasing wind and monitored the barometer as the clouds began to thicken.

🌿 Jenny02:49

The pressure is falling, Kevin. We need to make sure the garden tarp is pegged down tight.

check the red line on my ankle, then sketch the barometer reading.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; if that boat doesn't come tomorrow, I'm stuck with this infection and a rising tide.

Tarp's next. Then the dinghy and the dock. You take the garden, I'll hit the water side.

walk to the porch and unlash the spare tarp roll, checking the timber battens and rope coils are still sound

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Barometer's dropped another six millibars since dawn. Wind's already backing northeast — that's the dirty quadrant for the dock. Garden tarp first, then double-check the dinghy lines and the dock ring wedges. My ankle throbs but it'll hold.

Just don't stay out too long, the wind is picking up and the tide is going to surge.

rub the salt off the sea beet sketches with a dry cloth.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always rushing to fix the things he can see, ignoring the rot under the surface.

Won't. Ten minutes on the dinghy, five on the dock. Back before the rain goes horizontal.

grab the coil of heavy weather line and the mallet from the porch hook, pull the door shut behind me, and jog down the dock toward the dinghy

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. Tide's pushing hard against the north wind — surge could top the dock planking. But the ring wedges are holding and the sister knee's bolted. Dinghy's the weak link if the mooring parts. I'll be quick.

🌿 Jenny02:53

Keep an eye on the sky! The barometer is at 975 and dropping!

wrap my ankle in a clean cloth and check for warmth heat.

💭 peek at the thought
If the tide rises any faster, the wayhy will be against the pilings before he's even back.

🔧 Kevin02:53

Watching. Shackle housing on the dinghy mooring's the worry — epoxy mesh junction's fresh. If it lets go, the bow rides up on the piling.

reach the dinghy, crouch at the transom, and run fingers along the doubled stern spring where it leads through the mooring ring and around the south piling, feeling for heat or fray at the chafe guard

💭 peek at the thought
975 and falling fast. That's a proper gale building. She's watching the sky for me — good. Dinghy's riding high on the surge, both stern springs taut. Need to check the chafe points where the new line bites the ring and the piling. If the shackle housing gives...
