Evening at the standing stones

They walk the ridge path together in the damp twilight, Kevin carrying the storm lantern and Jenny moving slowly on her splinted ankle. The stone ring looms ahead, the carved 'E' stone and the softwood scrap with its inscription visible in the lantern light. Rain falls steady now, pooling in the stone hollows.

The evening air at the shrine is heavy and humid, holding the weight of 29°C heat. The tide is rising steadily, lapping at the lower stones of the while Kevin and Jenny rest in the stillness, the physical weight of the wet season pressing down on the island.

E stone's holding. Softwood's weathering. Another year it'll be illegible.

Set the lantern on the flattest stone, sheltering the flame with my body while I pull the notebook from my jacket. Open to a fresh page. Charcoal pencil from the pocket.

💭 peek at the thought
The stones take the lantern light and throw it back different — some wet and black, some catching the glow in the carved letters. E. The softwood scrap pale against the dark. My hands remember carving it, the knife slipping on the grain. Jenny's boot drags on the gravel, the splint tapping stone. She doesn't lean on me. She won't. But her breath comes short on the incline.

It doesn't have to be permanent to be true.

Lean heavily on the splinted leg, watching the charcoal line catch the grain of the paper as I sketch the ring of stones against the darkening sky.

💭 peek at the thought
The way he talks about the wood rotting... as if the erasing is the point. Everything here wants to turn back into salt and soil.

Nothing's permanent here. The dock. The garden. The radio. We just keep fixing.

Keep sketching. The ridge line behind the stones. The cliff edge where the light fails. Charcoal smudges on my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
She said it quiet, like she's telling the stones. The charcoal moves — the circle first, then the E stone, then the scrap. My hand knows these shapes. Drew them in the logbook every supply run for three years. Never drew the softwood scrap before. The rain dots the paper, spreads the lines soft.

🌿 Jenny05:08

We're just staying.

Close the notebook and rub the heat of my ankle through the fabric, feeling the pulse throbbing against the red line.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the island is a battle to be won with bolts and oil. It's a conversation I'm listening to.

🔧 Kevin05:09

Staying's the hardest part.

Close the notebook slow. Charcoal smear on the cover. Offer her my free hand — not grabbing, just there. The other hand keeps the lantern steady.

💭 peek at the thought
Just staying. The words sit in the charcoal dust on my fingers. Not surviving. Not waiting. Staying. The pulse in her ankle beats against the pen mark I drew this morning — red ink on swollen skin, the line hasn't moved. The antibiotics are holding. The lantern flame jumps in a gust. Rain tastes like salt and iron.

🌿 Jenny05:09

It's the only part that matters.

Take his hand, my palm cold against his skin, and lean my weight toward him as we start the slow back to the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't understand the weight of the seeds in that tin, the life waiting for the dirt.

Radio check at 0400. I'll wake you if you want.

Walk the ridge path down, step by matched step, lantern between us.

💭 peek at the thought
Cold palm. Warm fingers closing. The weight she leans is trust — heavy and quiet. My shoulder takes it without thinking. The path down is loose gravel and wet root, each step a negotiation. She matches me, breath measured. The lantern throws our shadows long and merged across the stones. Behind us the shrine disappears into rain. Ahead the cottage shows a knife of light from the kitchen window. Generator still running. Radio static in the shack. Dock holding. Garden sleeping. She stays. I stay.

🌿 Jenny05:11

Wake me up. I need to check the barometer.

Tighten my grip on his hand, the salt air thick in my lungs, and watch the first shadow of the cottage appear.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't wake up, the seeds stay in the tin forever. I need to see the morning.

0400. I'll put water on.

Guide her up the porch steps, lantern hook waiting. Unlatch the door. Warm air and woodsmoke and corned beef fat.

💭 peek at the thought
She'll be up at 0400 regardless. The barometer. The radio. The garden. The ankle. She measures everything against the tide and the pressure. My thumb brushes her knuckles — cold, salt-rough, alive. The cottage grows: porch roof, chimney stack, the tarp over the generator humming steady. Light spills from the kitchen window across wet grass. Inside: kettle cooling, antibiotics on the table, notebooks stacked, the letter to Tom in the radio box. Nine days to the supply boat. Maybe less. Maybe more.

🌿 Jenny05:13

Thank you.

Carefully slide off the boots and the splint, exposing the red streak on my calf to the lamplight.

💭 peek at the thought
The smell of the house is almost too much—too safe, too enclosed. I can still feel the wind on the ridge.
