Midday Gathering

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage porch as the rain finally stops. The air is heavy with humidity and the smell of salt and wet wood.

The tide continues to retreat, exposing the slick rocks of the lower pools. Kevin heads to the dock to check the structural integrity of the recent repairs while the water is low, while Jenny remains in the cottage, struggling to focus through the pain in her ankle to finish her sketches.

🔧 Kevin04:43

Coffee's hot. Mug on the stove.

Walk to the stove, lift the kettle, pour into two tin mugs, set one on the porch rail for her.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's off. Air's thick enough to drink. Jenny's moving — that's the main thing. Need to check the transom bolts before the tide turns proper, but she looks like she needs a minute.

🌿 Jenny04:43

Thanks. Don't move it, the sketches are still wet.

Jenny lifts the mug with a shaky hand, the warmth seeping into her palms, and takes a slow sip while she stares down at the sea beet morphology.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a hot drink fixes the world; he doesn't see the red line moving further up my calf.

Sketches'll keep. You need the rest more.

Lean against the doorframe, cradle my mug, watch the tide line on the dock pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
Hands shaking worse than she'll admit. Pen's still in her fingers. She's been at those sketches all morning — salt glands, venation, the lot. Ankle's wrapped tight but the red line's tracking. Metronidazole's in her, doxycycline too. Just need it to hold.

🌿 Jenny04:45

I'm not sleeping, Kevin. I need to finish the salt doctor.

Jenny presses the pencil down on the paper, shading the microscopic structure of the leaf with forced precision.

💭 peek at the thought
If I stop drawing, I'm just a patient rotting in a stone box.

🔧 Kevin04:47

Paper's damp. Graphite'll smudge. Let it dry.

Reach over, fingertip brushes the edge of the page — not touching the drawing — testing the moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
Salt doctor. She means the salt gland illustrations. Three years of this island and she's still naming things like they're patients. Stubborn as the greenheart. The pencil's digging — she'll tear the paper if she presses harder.

🌿 Jenny04:47

It's fine. I have it.

Jenny pulls the notebook slightly away from his hand, her jaw tightening as she grips the pencil tighter.

💭 peek at the thought
Everything is damp here. The air, the seeds, my skin.

🔧 Kevin04:49

Your call.

Step back, sip coffee, eyes on the swell rolling into the south beach — counting the set intervals.

💭 peek at the thought
Right then. Not fine. But she'll do it her way or not at all. Always has. The transom bolts can wait five minutes — tide's still pushing. Her ankle's the bigger worry. Red line hasn't moved past the pen mark since midnight. That's something.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:49

It's just one more layer.

Jenny turns back to the sea beet, focusing on the salt glands of the leaf, ignoring the heat radiating from her throbbing ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He watches the waves like they're a way to my infection.

🔧 Kevin04:51

Transom bolts at slack. Back in twenty.

Drain the mug, set it on the porch rail, pull the door shut behind me, walk down the path to the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
One more layer. Then another. Then the tide turns and the dock needs checking and the generator needs oil and the rat trap needs resetting and she'll still be at that page. The infection's not spreading past the mark. That's the only metric that matters right now.

🌿 Jenny04:51

(She says nothing.)

Jenny sets the pencil down, winces as she shifts her weight, and unwinds the saline-soaked bandage to check the red line.

💭 peek at the thought
Twenty minutes. Just enough to finish the venation.
