The Calm Before the Rain

Kevin and Jenny meet inside the cottage as the first heavy drops of rain hit the tin roof. The pressure has dropped significantly, and the wind is picking up from the east.

Kevin checked the dinghy's transom bronze sleeve and mast insulator at the dock while the tide rose, finding the sleeve secure but the coax connection corroded. Jenny re-dressed her ankle, noting reduced swelling but persistent heat, and sealed the heirloom seed tin with tape after confirming the seeds were dry. A fallen tree blocked the path to the spring.

🌿 Jenny06:39

The storm is coming early, Kevin. Check the seal on the dinghy again.

pulls the seed tin closer to the stove and wraps it in a dry towel.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping faster than I thought. If the roof holds another hour, grandmother's seeds are lost to the rot.

On it. Radio first — need to log the pressure drop for the trust report.

Walk to the radio shelf, key the shortwave, and transmit the 1800 weather log: position, pressure 985 hPa falling, wind east-northeast force 4 increasing, sea state 3, visibility 5 miles deteriorating.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Barometer dropped seven millibars since noon. Wind's already backing east — that'll drive swell straight into the dock face. Dinghy's the only way off this rock if the cottage goes.

🌿 Jenny06:41

Don't forget the salt- spray. The air is already getting thick.

adjusts the cold pack on her ankle, grimacing at the throbbing heat.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so obsessed with the report while the world is literally raining down.

🔧 Kevin06:43

Aye. Mast insulator held last blow but the tape's tired. I'll check the coax run while I'm at the dinghy.

Grab the LED headlamp, the self-amalgamating tape roll, and the 19mm wrench from the tool shelf, then head out the porch door toward the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
Salt spray eats insulators faster than wind. If the aerial goes, we're blind until the supply boat — if it comes. She's tracking the storm too, not just the ankle.

🌿 Jenny06:43

Be careful with the wrench! Don't drop it in the bilge!

leans back in the chair and closes her eyes, trying to breathe through the pulse of the infection.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going out in this? He'll be soaked in minutes. I can't even stand up without my head spinning from the hunger.

🔧 Kevin06:45

Won't. Lanyard's on it.

Clip the wrench to the tool lanyard on my belt, pull the porch door shut against the rising wind, and pick my way down the slick boards to the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
She knows my habits better than I do. Dropped the 19mm in the bilge twice last month — fished it out with a magnet on a string both times. Ankle's bad enough without her watching me fumble.

🌿 Jenny06:45

Jenny — slowly reaches for a tin of corned beef and the can opener, her movements stiff and cautious.

💭 peek at the thought
Lanyards and logs. He loves his systems. Meanwhile, I'm sitting here shaking because I haven't eaten since yesterday.

Step onto the dock, feet finding the familiar gaps between planks, and move toward the dinghy bobbing at the mooring ring.

💭 peek at the thought
She's eating one-handed, left hand braced on the chair arm. Won't ask for help opening it. Won't take the second dose of metronidazole until she's got food down. Stubborn as the Yanmar's starter bendix.
