← Day 447

the keeper's cottage · day 447 · night

Night watch and wind

Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table in the lamplight. The wind howls around the eaves, driving rain against the shutters. The barometer on the wall reads 978 hPa and falling. The fallen spruce thuds against the hillside in gusts. The shortwave radio is silent. They share a tin mug of limpet broth.

The humidity hangs heavy over the cottage as the overcast sky presses down with the promise of coming rain. Inside, the rhythmic drip from the leak in the shutter into the galvanized bucket marks the slow passage of pre-dawn hours while the high tide holds its peak, the salt water lapping at the dock pilings.

It's really hitting. I hope that spare insulator holds, or we're completely blind until the boat comes.

Sip the broth slowly, leaning my injured ankle away from the table edge.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is plummeting. We're right in the teeth of it now. I can feel the throb in my ankle syncing up with the wind.

Insulator's solid. Porcelain, fresh tape. Mast's braced. It's the coax I'm worried about — old run's rotted. Spare's inside, unopened. We'll swap it at first light if the wind drops.

sip from the tin mug, set it down, glance at the barometer on the wall

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's dropping faster than I like. 978 and falling means the front's deepening. If it holds below 970 past 0400, the north channel turns into a washing machine. Spare insulator's new porcelain, sealed with self-amalgamating tape — should hold unless a tree takes the mast. But the coax is still the weak link; shield continuity failed on the old run, and the spare roll's unopened in the cottage. Jenny's ankle heat hasn't spiked since the re-wrap. Doxycycline's in her. Metronidazole too. She's tougher than she lets on.

🌿 Jenny06:49

If the coax goes, I'm not climbing the mast. Not with this leg like this.

Reach for the seed tin, tracing my thumb over the metal edge, checking for any new dampness.

💭 peek at the thought
First light feels a lifetime away when the pressure is this low. My own feels like it's being squeezed by a fist.

🔧 Kevin06:51

You're not climbing. Neither am I unless it's calm. Receive path's good — new coax to garden frame. Transmit's the mast top. If the insulator blows, we listen. Boat's due in seven. They'll raise us on VHF.

reach across the table, rest two fingers on the seed tin lid beside her thumb, steady

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Mast's twelve metres of spruce in a gale, no safety line, one good leg. Not happening. Coax run from radio shack to garden frame ground is new, BNC connected — that's the receive path. Transmit needs the mast top. If the insulator holds, we talk. If it doesn't, we listen. Either way, the supply boat's due in seven days. They'll have VHF. We'll hear them. She's checking the seed tin again. Third time tonight. Damp's the enemy.

🌿 Jenny06:51

Seven days is a long time to wait for a boat when the radio is failing.

Pull my hand back from the tin, focusing on the sea beet sketches drying on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always trying to fix the world with bolts, but the island doesn't care. My ankle is a heartbeat now.

🔧 Kevin06:53

The boat comes when it comes. We've waited longer. Sketches look clean. Salt glands detailed.

pick up the ballpoint pen from the table, tap it once against the notebook cover, set it back down

💭 peek at the thought
Seven days. Or fourteen. Or twenty-one. The trust's boat keeps its own schedule. She's looking at the sea beet sketches — salt gland illustrations, elevation gradient data. Work that matters to her. Work that doesn't care about the radio. The wind shrieks round the eaves. Shutter leak drips into the galvanized bucket. Rhythm. Barometer's 978 and falling. If it holds below 970 past 0400, the north channel's confused. Slack tide at 0530. I'll check the transom sleeve with the come-along. Bronze held today. It'll hold tomorrow. But the coax... the coax is the thing.

🌿 Jenny06:53

They need to be dry. If the salt gets into the paper again...

Shift weight off the ankle, wincing as the heat spikes through the bandage.

💭 peek at the thought
The sketches are the only thing that isn't throbbing right now. Everything else is just failing.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin06:55

They'll stay dry. Tin's sealed. Tape's holding. Paper's on the table, not the floor.

stand, move to the wood stove, pull the kettle off the hook, pour hot water into the second tin mug, set it on the table in front of her

💭 peek at the thought
Salt in the paper. She's right. The notebook took weeks to de-salt last time. Pages stuck, ink bled, data lost. The sketches are drying on the table — sea beet salt glands, Carex transect, wild mustard. All of it fragile. The ankle heat spiked. She winced. Didn't make a sound. The doxycycline's been in her six hours. Metronidazole too. Red line hasn't moved past the pen mark in six hours. That's the metric. That's what I watch.
