Midday Heat

The tide has reached its high mark, leaving the garden partially submerged as the overcast pressure begins to drop.

The air is heavy and humid, the overcast sky pressing low over the keeper's cottage. The tide is retreating steadily, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools near the dock. Inside the cottage, the leak from the shutter drips rhythmically into the galvanized bucket, a constant reminder of the coming front.

Jenny — tighten the wrap on my ankle and watch the waves lap against the stones.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is too high; if the tide doesn't recede, the salt will rot the heirloom seedlings before I even get them started.

Wall held. Water's over the beds but the wall held.

Walk to the dock and check the mooring ring tension on the doubled stern line, then the north piling shim at the waterline.

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's peaked. Garden's gone under for now — basil, lettuce, the pepper cells that survived damping-off. Wall held two courses higher but water finds its level. Barometer's dropping. Not fast, but steady. Jenny's watching the water, not me. Ankle wrap's tight. She hasn't complained in hours.

🌿 Jenny06:25

The soil saturation is what matters now, Kevin.

Pick up the pencil and move the sea beet sketches away from the edge of the table.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the stone wall is the victory, but the salt is already in the soil.

🔧 Kevin06:27

Aye. Deadmans holding the tomatoes. Trays on the shelf?

Step onto the porch and lift the seed trays from the lower shelf to the upper bench, checking the pepper and lettuce cells for saltwater splash.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Salt in the root zone kills slower than wind but just as sure. Tomatoes on deadman anchors might ride it out if the soil drains before the next high. Peppers and lettuce in trays — gone if they took on brine. Need to check the garden wall seepage at low tide, see if the lime beds buffered any.

🌿 Jenny06:28

Careful with the lettuce. It's fragile.

Lean back against the whitewashed wall and rub my thumb over the seal of the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's treating them like furniture, not living things. I hope the splash didn't hit the lettuce; it's already struggling with the fungus.

🔧 Kevin06:28

Kevin — lift the lettuce tray with both hands, slow and level, and set it on the upper bench beside the tomato seedlings. Examine the two remaining cells for splash damage.

💭 peek at the thought
She's been saving those lettuce seeds longer than I've known her. Grandmother's line. She'd rather lose the crop than the genetics. My hands are rough for this — engine grease under the nails, calluses from rope and wrench — but she's watching. I'll go slow.

🌿 Jenny06:29

Did any hit the soil?

Stand up slowly, leaning on the doorframe to take the weight off my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually being gentle for once. If those cells survive the salt, they still have to survive the damping-off.

🔧 Kevin06:31

Porch floor was wet. Didn't check the soil surface.

Crouch and tilt the lettuce tray to catch the light, inspecting the soil surface of both cells for salt crust or standing brine.

💭 peek at the thought
She's asking about salt splash on the soil surface — not the leaves. Roots take it up fast. The tray was low on the shelf, porch floor got wet when the wave overtopped the step. I didn't look close enough.
