Morning Day 447

The tide is now licking the lower stones of the garden wall. The air is heavy with moisture, and the smell of salt salt is thickening.

Kevin rescued the tomato stakes and basil pots from the garden before the rising tide could claim them. Jenny sat on the porch step, wrapped in a blanket, watching the water overtake the garden wall.

🔧 Kevin06:15

We're moving. Now. Cottage. I'll carry the trays.

scoop up the seedling trays with one arm, offer the other arm to Jenny for support, and start walking back toward the cottage at a pace she can manage

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's coming in faster than I expected. The deadman anchors won't hold in this muck — ground's turned to soup. Need to get the shade cloth and seed trays moved before the water reaches them. Jenny's ankle can't take the slope back to the cottage in this wet.

🌿 Jenny06:15

I've got it. Just... don't drop the peppers.

Take his arm for balance, leaning heavily into him as they move toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks I'm a broken thing. I can walk, even if it feels like a hot needle is driven into my joint.

🔧 Kevin06:17

Peppers secured. Tomatoes next. You sit on the porch step — I'll bring them.

set the seedling trays carefully on the porch floor, then turn back toward the garden to retrieve the tomato stakes and any remaining pots before the tide takes them

💭 peek at the thought
She's lighter than she should be. The infection took more out of her than she'll admit. Peppers first — they're the most tender. Then the tomato stakes. The basil's already gone. Move steady. Don't jar the ankle.

🌿 Jenny06:17

Watch the wall, the tide is coming in faster than you think.

Sit on the porch step, clutching my swollen ankle and watching the water reach for the weeds.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being too careful. It makes me feel smaller than I am.

🔧 Kevin06:19

Noted. Stay put.

move quickly along the garden path, pulling tomato stakes from the softened earth and stacking them against my shoulder, grabbing the two remaining basil pots on the way back to the porch

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Water's already licking the bottom course. The wall held last storm but that was before the mortar softened. If the tide pushes driftwood against it... Get the stakes. Get back. Don't argue.

🌿 Jenny06:19

I'm not a garden gnome, Kevin.

Shift the tomato stakes away from my shoulder with a sharp movement and rub the heat of the infection through the cloth wrap.

💭 peek at the thought
He's treating me like a piece of furniture. I can't stand the "stay put" tone.

🔧 Kevin06:21

Didn't say you were. Gnome would've let me carry the lot.

set the stakes and basil pots on the porch decking, then crouch to lift her boot onto the raised edge of the planter box — keeping her ankle above hip level — and pull the blanket from the porch rail to drape over her shoulders

💭 peek at the thought
She moved the stakes before I could set them down. Good arm. Bad ankle. Stubborn as the day I met her. The heat's radiating through the wrap — infection's still fighting. She needs the leg up, not down on the step.

🌿 Jenny06:21

Jenny — pull the blanket tighter around my shoulders and stare out at the tide swallowing the wall.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being kind, and it feels like suffocating. My ankle is throbbing against the wood.
