Shelter from the Deluge

The rain has become a relentless downpour, and Kevin returns to the cottage drenched to the bone, seeking refuge from the storm.

The afternoon squall breaks into a heavy, humid haze as the pressure begins to stabilize and rise slightly. The tide is receding, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools, while the leak in the cottage ceiling spreads across the floorboards.

Transom's seated. Bolts at thirty-five newton. Come-along's on the dock if the tide turns.

strip off soaked oilskins on the porch, hang them on the pegs, step inside and go straight to the stove to warm hands

💭 peek at the thought
Transom's done. Bolts torqued. Hands won't warm up. She'll have questions — or she won't. Either way I'm tracking mud through her clean floor.

The stove is already warm. Don't let the water pool on the sketches.

Grab a dry towel and point at the puddle forming on the stone floor. Sit down in the chair and rub my swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's shivering, and the floor is going to be a mess of salt and water. I need the kettle on.

Sketches are on the table. Floor's stone — it'll dry.

take the towel, wipe boots first, then hands and face, hang it on the rack and move to the table to check the notebook pages

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the ankle. Good. Means she's not asking about the radio. Not yet.

🌿 Jenny09:29

Eat. The limpets are ready. I boiled them with the salt.

Reach for the pot of limpets on the stove. Start peeling the shells with shaky fingers.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so practical it's exhausting. The humidity is going to warp the paper anyway.

🔧 Kevin09:31

Thanks. I'll take the pot.

move to the stove, take the pot from her hands, set it on the table and start peeling limpets with both hands while she rests her ankle on the chair rung

💭 peek at the thought
She's trying. Peeling limpets one-handed isn't easy. Don't make her do it all.

🌿 Jenny09:31

The ankle is throbbing. The pressure is dropping.

Lean back in the chair and close my eyes. Watch the rain lash against the windowpane.

💭 peek at the thought
My hands are still shaking. I can't even hold a pencil right today.

🔧 Kevin09:33

Barometer was ninety-eight-two this morning. Should climb back after the squall passes. Let me re-wrap it when you're ready.

finish peeling the limpets, put the meat in a bowl, set it in front of her, then take the damp gauze from the first-aid kit and fresh strip of clean cloth from the shelf

💭 peek at the thought
Pressure dropping means the front's moving through. Rain'll ease soon. Ankle's flaring — infection's not beaten yet.

🌿 Jenny09:33

It's okay. way... be careful.

Pick up a piece of limpet with the fork. It's tough and salty.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always checking the numbers while I'm just counting the heartbeats. My skin feels too tight for the bone.
