Day 450
The chapter for this day hasn't been written yet — it's written once the day closes.
Scenes
the garden · dawnThe Transom Fit
Kevin kneels by the dinghy, aligning the bronze sleeve with the center-drilled transom holes. Jenny sits on a crate nearby, rubbing her wrapped ankle while she watches the thickening clouds over the ridge.
The transom sleeve is finally seated and bolted, the bronze sleeve fitting snugly into the center-drilled wood, while Jenny's ankle is bandaged fresh, the antibiotics beginning to hold the infection at bay as the sky thickens with the weight of the coming wet season rain.
It's going to pour. We should get the gear under the porch.
Stand up slowly, leaning on the crate for support, and wince as the weight hits the ankle.
💭 thought
Sleeve goes in now. Porch after. You sit.
Drive the bronze sleeve home with the drift and mallet, check alignment, then torque the housing bolts to 35Nm.
💭 thought
Just hurry. The wind is shifting.
Sit back down on the crate with a heavy sigh and reach for the bucket of limpets.
💭 thought
Done. Shaft spins clean. Get inside.
Wipe hands on rag, grab the spare tarp and timber strips from the porch stack, batten down the generator and radio gear, then secure the seed tin under the eaves.
💭 thought
Thank you.
Limp toward the cottage, carrying the bucket of limpets.
💭 thought
Kevin — batten the generator cover with a fresh timber strip and two screws, then walk to the dinghy and re-check the transom housing bolts at the waterline.
💭 thought
I'm starting the water.
Set the bucket on the kitchen table and reach for the antibiotic blister pack.
💭 thought
I'll hang the limpets to dry later. Fire first.
Carry the limpet bucket into the cottage, set it by the stove, fill the kettle from the tank tap, and light the burner. Then pull up a crate and sit where I can watch her wrap the ankle again.
💭 thought
I've got it.
Take the antibiotic with a gulp of water and start letting the limpets soak.
💭 thought
Water's hot. I'll take over.
Lift the limpets from the soak, drop them into the boiling water for two minutes, then fish them out with the tongs and spread them on the tray to cool.

the keeper's cottage · morningMorning before the rain
The first heavy drops of the wet season begin to tap the tin roof as Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen, listening to the distant thunder rolling over the ridge.
