Night watch and radio schedule
Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table in the lamplight. The shortwave radio sits silent on the shelf, its shattered insulator still unreplaced. Outside, warm rain hammers the roof and the wind gusts against the porch screen. It is 0350 — ten minutes until the 0400 radio schedule. Kevin's hand rests on the mic key.
Kevin transmitted a brief call to Tom on the shortwave at 0400, but received no reply. The radio remained silent after his transmission.
(quiet, to Jenny) Four minutes.
lift the mic from its cradle, thumb hovering over the transmit key, eyes on the glowing dial

Good luck.
Lean back in the chair and watch the shadow of the rain against the window.

(key the mic, voice low and steady into the dead air) This is Kevin. Sorrel Island. Receiving. Tom — forty-one today. Still here. Still listening.
hold the key down a beat longer, then release, letting the silence rush back in

I hope he answers this time.
Reach for the pencil and trace the edge of the sea beet sketch in the notebook.
