← Day 454

the old shrine · day 454 · evening

The storm intensifies

The rain continues to fall harder, and the barometer continues to drop as the wind shifts to the west.

The evening air is heavy and still at 31°C as the dry season heat lingers. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick rocks and tide pools near the shore. At the shrine, the barometer shows a drop to 980 hPa, signaling an approaching shift in the weather.

Kevin, check the tie on the dinghy.

stand up slowly, wincing as the ankle pulses, and move toward the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. If it hits 975, the ridge is going to lose the path to the shrine.

🔧 Kevin13:17

Checking it now.

walk to the dock and inspect the dinghy lines, mooring ring, and pilings under load

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's west and pressure dropping — swell's going to build against the dock. Dinghy's only held by the doubled stern spring and breast line. If the mooring ring shifts again, she'll pound the pilings.

🌿 Jenny13:19

Double the knot. The swell is coming harder than usual.

open the tin of corned beef and find a fork.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to miss the tension on the springer line. The wind is already pulling it.

🔧 Kevin13:19

Adding a forward breast line. Back in a minute.

retrieve the coil of new half-inch three-strand from the porch, run a second breast line from the dinghy's forward cleat to the seaward piling, tension it, and secure with a round turn and two half hitches

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The fetch is long from the west and the tide's still high enough to push swell under the dock. The doubled stern spring's good but the breast line's single. Need a second breast line forward to keep her off the pilings.

🌿 Jenny13:21

Keep an eye on the radio. The tide is turning too fast.

take a bite of the corned beef and chew through the salt, ignoring the throbbing in my leg.

💭 peek at the thought
Better. But the wind is still screaming through the eaves and that ankle feels like a hot iron.

🔧 Kevin13:21

Radio's solid. New insulator, fresh coax. I'll check the connections before dark.

walk back to the cottage, climb the porch steps, and inspect the coax run at the garden frame ground stake and the BNC connector at the radio shack entry

💭 peek at the thought
Tide turning fast with west swell means the dinghy's going to surge against the lines. Radio's got the new insulator and spare coax run — should hold. But if the aerial takes a wave, we lose comms. Need to check the coax run at the garden frame ground and the BNC at the shack.

🌿 Jenny13:23

Don't stay out there. The barometer is bottoming.

open the notebook and sketch the red streaks rising from the wound on my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focused on the wires while the sky is falling. I need to see that infection.

🔧 Kevin13:24

Coming in. Coffee?

step inside the cottage, shake off the rain, and set the kettle on the stove

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. 980 and steady with west wind means the bottom's close. Squall line'll hit within the hour. Dinghy's double-breasted now, ring's shimmed with oak wedges and through-bolted. Nothing more to do out there until the tide drops.

🌿 Jenny13:25

Yes. I need to sit.

lean back on the chair, propping my ankle up on a stool, watching the rain blur the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
The sound of the kettle is the only thing that doesn't feel like breaking right now.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin13:25

Two mugs. Strong.

measure coffee into the tin mugs, pour boiling water, let it steep, and set one on the table beside her good leg

💭 peek at the thought
Her ankle's worse than she's saying. Red streaks tracking up the calf means the antibiotics aren't holding the line. She's been on doxycycline and metronidazole — two doses down, five to go. If the streaks reach the knee by morning, the evacuation form in the ditch bag stops being paperwork.
