The Storm Breaks

The rain has turned into a heavy downpour and the wind is howling from the north. Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen as the barometer drops sharply.

Kevin and Jenny secured loose items against the shifting wind. Kevin coiled the crate rope and checked the porch lashings; Jenny moved the heirloom seed tin and coffee jar to the kitchen table, confirming the flour sack was ruined by damp and rats.

The wind is shifting. We need to move the tin away from the wall.

Grab the heirloom seed tin from the generator housing and move it to the center of the kitchen table.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is bottoming out; if the roof leaks over the generator, the seeds are ruined before they even dry.

Grab the coffee jar too. And the flour sack if it's not ruined.

move to the porch doorway and check the canvas rolls and tarp lashing, making sure nothing's working loose in the gusts

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. North wind drives rain horizontal against that wall. Generator exhaust heat won't matter if water gets in the tin. Barometer's falling fast — this isn't letting up.

🌿 Jenny19:22

The flour is gone, Kevin. It's damp and chewed.

Pick up the coffee jar and set it next to the seed tin on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
The flour is already a mess from the mice, I'm not wasting energy on it right now.

🔧 Kevin19:23

Right. Corned beef and mackerel tins still good?

step back into the kitchen, pull the crate rope off the floor and coil it neat against the wall, out of the wet track

💭 peek at the thought
Flour's gone. Coffee's safe. Seeds are safe. That's the tally. Should've checked the sack sooner — mice don't wait for permission.
