The Storm Sets In

Kevin and Jenny are inside the cottage as the wind picks up from the west. The tide is out, leaving the island's edge exposed to the rain.

Kevin stands on the slick dock, shifting his weight as he tests the tension on the dinghy's stern line. The bolts are holding into the soft wood, but without a backing plate, the wood groans as the wind picks up. In the cottage, Jenny watches from the window, her hand clutching her throbbing calf as she monitors the tide bottoming out outside.

🌿 Jenny02:41

Check the tackle on the dinghy. The wind is catching it.

adjusts her leg propped on pillows and winces as the throbbing pulses against the gauze.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. If this storm hits before the boat comes, I won't be able to walk to the dock anyway.

🔧 Kevin02:41

On it.

pull on boots and oilskins, grab the headlamp, and head out to the dock to check the dinghy tackle

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the dinghy's lashed but the warp could be slack with the tide out. Wind's backing west hard now. Need to check the bow line and stern springs before the surge hits.

🌿 Jenny02:43

Watch your step on the kelp!

pulls the heirloom seed tin from the table and carefully opens the lid to check for any new white mold.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get soaked. The rocks are slick with the tide going out.

🔧 Kevin02:43

Aye.

step carefully down the porch steps and across the slick dock planks toward the dinghy, testing each footfall

💭 peek at the thought
Kelp on the dock planks is lethal when wet. She's watching the seeds while I watch the boat. Fair division.

🌿 Jenny02:45

Don't stay out too long, the tide is bottoming out!

uses a magnifying glass to inspect the sea much seeds, looking for any sign of rot.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is picking up now. If that line snaps, the dinghy is lost to the surf.

🔧 Kevin02:45

Won't.

reach the dinghy, crouch to inspect the bow warp tension at the forward eye bolt, then move aft to check both stern springs at the mooring ring and piling

💭 peek at the thought
Tide bottoming means the dinghy's sitting on its keel in the mud — lines go slack, chafe risk spikes when the flood turns. Need to check the bow warp and both stern springs are tight before the water comes back.

🌿 Jenny02:47

Is the stern cleat holding?

presses a hand to her throbbing calf, watching the tracking line move own her knee.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is going out so fast. The boat is straining hard against the dock with every gust.

🔧 Kevin02:47

Holding for now. Bolts are only into transom face — no backing plate. If the wind picks up past thirty, it'll rip out.

grab the stern line, heave tension to test the cleat, watch the bolt heads for movement

💭 peek at the thought
Stern cleat's the weak link — greenheart's hard but the through-bolts are only into the transom face, not through-bolted with a backing plate. If the wind gusts over thirty, that cleat could rip out. Should've reinforced it last month.
