The Gathering Storm

The air grows heavy as the overcast sky drops lower, and the first heavy drops of rain hit the dock planks.

Kevin secured the south window shutter and replaced the porch door shim with a fresh cedar wedge, though the soft wood limited the repair's durability. Jenny attempted to debride her infected ankle but the pain and swelling prevented thorough cleaning; she managed to re-dress the wound and moved the heirloom seed tin to the stove's warmth to continue drying.

Coming in. Shutters need battening before the wind shifts.

Walk up the dock to the cottage porch, test the porch door latch, then move to the kitchen window to check the shutter bolts.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's starting proper now. Barometer at 996 and rising slow — storm's still building but the pressure's not crashing like yesterday. Need to get the dinghy secured and check the cottage shutters before the wind picks up. Jenny's on the porch watching the tide turn. Her ankle's tracking past the calf now, hot to touch. She won't say how bad it feels.

🌿 Jenny02:49

Check the south window first, the bolt is rattling since morning.

Jenny sets the magnifying glass down, winces as she shifts her weight to her good leg, and reaches for the antibiotic bottle to ensure the next dose is ready.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; this storm is going to be a breaker and I need to get the seeds off the table.

🔧 Kevin02:51

Right.

Cross the kitchen to the south window, slide the bolt home, test it with the heel of my hand, then move to the porch door to check the hinge and latch.

💭 peek at the thought
South window bolt's been loose since the last blow. She heard it rattling all morning and didn't wake me. Stubborn. I'll fix it and the porch door while I'm at it.

🌿 Jenny02:51

The door is sticking, give it a hard when you pull.

Jenny leans against the kitchen counter, breathing through the throb in her leg, and begins gathering the damp seed packets to move them to the dry stove.

💭 peek at the thought
If that latch doesn't hold, the spray will get into the tin and I'll lose everything.

🔧 Kevin02:53

Shim's shot. Got a fresh cedar wedge in the workshop.

Pull the porch door hard to seat it, slide the bolt, then head to the workshop shelf for a cedar wedge and the mallet.

💭 peek at the thought
Door's swollen from the damp. Cedar shim I used last week compressed to nothing. Need to drive a fresh one or plane the jamb. She's moving the seed tin — good, keeps her hands busy and off the ankle.

🌿 Jenny02:53

Be careful with the mallet, the wood is soft from the rot.

Jenny lifts the heirloom seed tin from the table, wrapping it in a dry cloth, and sets it on the warmest part of the wood stove.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is already picking up; if he doesn't get that door tight, the salt spray is over.
