Evening Stillness

The air is thick and unmoving as the sun dips below the grey horizon. Kevin and Jenny meet on the porch, the sound of the generator cooling replaced by the distant lapping of the receding tide.

The humid night air is heavy and still, the scent of salt and damp earth clinging to the cottage. The tide is fully out, leaving the shore pools slick and smelling of kelp and decay. Inside the cottage, the low hum of the generator provides a constant backdrop to the rhythmic scratching of Jenny's pencil on paper.

Evening.

sit on the porch step beside her, close enough that our shoulders almost touch, and pull the kettle off the stove to pour two mugs of the limpet broth still warming there

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the horizon like she's waiting for something to rise out of it. The pencil line on her leg is past the knee now. I should've cut yesterday. I should've cut the day before. The radio's dead quiet on 2182. Six days to the boat if it comes. Six days of this.

🌿 Jenny03:47

The pressure's holding steady.

way takes the mug with both hands, the warmth seeping into her cold palms, and reaches for her notebook to check the pencil mark on her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The red line hasn't moved past the mark, but the heat feels like it's pulsing.

Barometer hasn't moved in six hours. Generator's got fuel for twelve days at two-hour cycles. Water tank's full.

wrap both hands around my own mug, letting the heat bleed into my palms, and watch the pencil scratch across paper in the dying light

💭 peek at the thought
Steady at 1002. That's something. Not rising, not falling. Means the front's stalled or passed. Means we buy time. Her fingers are white-knuckled on the mug. The pencil line — she's measuring it like a tide mark. Like if she documents it careful enough, it stops being real.

🌿 Jenny03:49

It's good. For now.

take a slow sip of the broth, my eyes fixed on the red line on my skin to see if it has climbed even a millimeter higher.

💭 peek at the thought
Twelve days is enough if the boat shows up, but the island doesn't care.

🔧 Kevin03:49

You want me to look at it again? Proper light inside.

set the mug down on the porch floorboards and reach for the headlamp hanging from the nail by the door, clicking it on without waiting for an answer

💭 peek at the thought
It's climbed. I can see it from here — three, four millimeters past where she marked it this afternoon. The skin around it is shiny, tight. Hot. She knows. She's just not saying. The broth's good protein, salts, warmth. Won't touch what's moving up her leg. Six days. The boat doesn't always come on schedule. Sometimes it doesn't come at all.

🌿 Jenny03:51

way check the line.

peel back the damp gauze on my ankle, flinching as the cool air hits the raw skin, and hold my leg out for him to see.

💭 peek at the thought
The light is too bright, but I need to see if the infection is winning.

🔧 Kevin03:51

It's tracking up the thigh. Lymphatics.

crouch down, headlamp beam sharp on the wound, fingers probing the edge of the fluctuance — hot, tense, ready to burst — then reach for the first aid kit on the shelf behind me without taking my eyes off her leg

💭 peek at the thought
Past the knee. The red streaks feathering up the thigh now — lymphangitic spread. That's bloodstream territory. Septicemia. The smell hits me before I even lean in: sweet-rot, old meat, something floral underneath from the mint poultice trying to fight it. The skin's purple-black at the center. Fluctuant. Full of pus. She's burning up; I can feel the heat radiating off her leg from six inches away. Her pulse at the ankle is thready, fast. Twelve hours, maybe less, before she crashes. The boat's six days out if it comes. The radio's silent. The helicopter's grounded. I have a scalpel in the first aid kit. I have antibiotics for two more days. I have hands that know how to cut.

🌿 Jenny03:53

Don't be too rough.

hold my breath, watching his fingers white against the skin as he traces the red line.

💭 peek at the thought
If it hits the groin, I'm not going to see the spring.
