The First Squall

The pair retreats inside the cottage as the first heavy drops of rain hit the tin roof, the sky finally opening up completely.

Kevin and Jenny sat at the shrine to spread out heirloom seeds on newspaper as the humidity broke. They prepared to run the generator to dehumidify the air while the first rain began to hit the roof. Jenny worked through the pain of her throbbing ankle while Kevin monitored the fuel levels.

🌿 Jenny04:40

Close the door, Kevin. The wind is picking up.

Move the seed tin further onto the center of the table and tighten the ankle bandage.

💭 peek at the thought
Finally, some rain—but I hope the roof doesn't leak over the seeds. They are already damp.

🔧 Kevin04:41

Shut.

pull the cottage door fully closed, engage the latch, and drop the crossbar; turn back to the table and check the seed tin's sitting square on the cleared center space, tin lid sealed with tape; glance at Jenny's ankle where the bandage sit

💭 peek at the thought
Door's already half-shut behind me. Wind's shifting northeast — cold front riding the back of this low. Tin roof's going to scream soon.

🌿 Jenny04:41

It's shut. Now let me see those seeds again.

Open the seed tin to check the moisture level of the grandmother's seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so brief when the weather is turning. I need to check if the humidity is getting into the tin.

🔧 Kevin04:43

Tin was taped. But air's got teeth tonight.

step to the table opposite her, arms folded, watching the tin lid come off; reach for the notebook and ballpoint pen beside it, ready to log anything that's turned

💭 peek at the thought
She's checking moisture because the air's thick enough to wring water from. Grandmother's tin was sealed tight before — but tape breathes over days like this.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:43

The air is heavy. I can feel it in my joints.

Spread out a handful of seeds into the palm to inspect for clumping or early mold.

💭 peek at the thought
If these rot, the whole season is gone. I can't let them go to the damp.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin04:45

Spread them on the newspaper. Single layer. I'll run the generator dehumidify cycle if any stick.

tear a clean sheet from the newspaper bundle on the shelf, lay it flat on the table beside her hand, wait for the seeds to spill out onto it; glance at the generator through the window — fuel gauge, exhaust clear

💭 peek at the thought
Her joints read weather better than the barometer. Seeds in her palm — tomato, pepper, the one lettuce variety she favors. If they clump, we lose a season.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:45

I'll spread them out. They feel a bit tacky already.

Carefully spread the seeds onto the newspaper, thinning them out to ensure they aren't overlapping.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, the humidity is a killer. I need to see if they are still viable.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin04:47

Generator's got eleven days fuel at current draw. Two-hour dehumidify burn won't hurt the reserve.

cross to the porch door, unhook the spare tarp rolled beside the frame, shake it out; return to the table and drape it loose over the spread seeds — not sealed, just a roof against drips from the ceiling beams; pull up the stool and sit, wa

💭 peek at the thought
Tacky means the tape seal failed days ago. Or the tin breathed when we opened it for the Carex seeds. Either way — moisture's in the grandmother's stock now.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:47

I hope the roof holds. My ankle is throbbing anyway.

Reach out and touch a cluster of seeds, feeling them for any sign of softening or rot.

💭 peek at the thought
The tarp is a good idea if the roof starts leaking. I can't lose these seeds to a simple drip.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin04:49

Roof's sound. Patched the shutter leak last week. Ankle?

lean forward on the stool, forearms on knees, watching her fingers work the seed clusters; reach for the tin mug of limpet broth on the table edge, slide it toward her without a word

💭 peek at the thought
Roof held worse. She's not complaining — just stating. Throbbing means the infection pocket's still draining, pressure shifting with the barometer. Good sign, actually. Bad sign would be numb.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:49

It's better. The pressure seems to make it pulse.

Take a small sip of the broth, wincing at the heat, then turn back to the seeds.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always watching the injury while I'm trying to watch the life in these seeds.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin04:51

Drainage working then. Drink it slow.

settle back on the stool, boots braced on the floorboards; listen to the first real hammer of rain on the tin roof — heavy, sustained, the sound of a week's humidity finally breaking; watch her fingers separate a stuck tomato pair, flick th

💭 peek at the thought
Pressure pulsing means the drainage channel's open. Fever's gone. She's eating. That's three wins in a week that's given us mostly losses.
