The Sound of the Rain

The interior of the cottage fills with the rhythmic drumming on the tin roof. Kevin and Jenny sit by the table, the smell of damp newspaper rising as the storm settles outside.

The air is heavy and still as the pressure drops further, signaling the approaching storm. Kevin prepares the mint poultice for Jenny's ankle while she focuses on securing the damp heirloom seeds from the rising winds.

🔧 Kevin04:51

Generator's got eleven days of fuel at current draw. Might run it a couple hours this afternoon to pull the damp out of the air. Seeds need it.

check the generator fuel gauge and oil level

💭 peek at the thought
The rain's steady now. Good for the seeds if the tarp holds. Bad for the ankle if the damp creeps back in. Generator's got eleven days at this draw — might need to run it just for the air, not the power.

Run it. The air feels like a wet blanket anyway.

Reach for the seed tin and check the edges of the packets for any new signs of mold.

💭 peek at the thought
If the humidity stays this high, the charts will rot before they hit the soil. I can't let grandmother's seeds turn to mush.

🔧 Kevin04:53

Two hours. Start it after lunch.

pull the generator out from under the porch, check the air filter, and start it up

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The damp gets into everything — lungs, seeds, sleep. Two hours of generator noise is better than losing another packet to mold.

🌿 Jenny04:57

I'll get the mint poultice started while we wait.

Stand up slowly, moving toward the kitchen stove to boil the water and mint.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the engine is humming. I need to get that ankle cleaned before the storm gets any worse.

🔧 Kevin04:57

(quiet, to the generator as it catches) There she goes.

let the generator warm up, then run the exhaust hose out the porch door so the fumes don't settle inside

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's moving on her own. The ankle's draining, the fever's down, and she's making her own mint tea. That's the rhythm returning.

🌿 Jenny04:59

Make sure the exhaust is clear of the intake.

Crush the mint sprigs between my fingers and drop them into the boiling water.

💭 peek at the thought
The sound of the engine is better than the silence of the storm. I hope the dehumidifier actually reaches the seed tin.

🔧 Kevin04:59

Exhaust hose runs out the porch door, intake's on the far side. Wind's off the south, blows it clean.

double-check the exhaust hose outlet past the porch rail, then wipe down the generator frame with a rag

💭 peek at the thought
She knows the generator better than she lets on. Exhaust clear of intake, air filter clean, oil topped — she's watched every start.

🌿 Jenny05:01

I'm going to clean the wound while the mint steeps.

Carry the pot to the table and set out the salt and water for the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The air is already heavy. If I don't get the moisture out of that tin, the seeds are lost.
