The squall arrives

The first heavy drops of rain hit the dust-covered roof as the wind picks up suddenly from the north.

Kevin helped Jenny back to the cottage after she sprained her ankle at the shrine. They moved the damp heirloom seeds to the kitchen to prevent rot, and Kevin applied ice to the swelling while the air pressure continued to drop.

—

throw a tarp over the Yanmar and secure it with bungees, grab the tool bag, head up the path to the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
Squall's here early. Need to get the Yanmar covered and tools secured before the dock turns into a skating rink. Jenny's back at the cottage with the crate — she's got the crowbar. I'll button up here and head up.

🌿 Jenny20:15

Kevin! The crate! Help me inside!

drop the crowbar, gather the tin of seeds, and limp toward the cottage door while clutching my swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. If I don't get these seeds inside now, the mold will win.

🔧 Kevin20:16

Coming!

jog up the path toward the cottage, meet Jenny halfway, take the seed tin from her, loop an arm around her waist to take weight off the ankle

💭 peek at the thought
She's struggling. Ankle's bad. Crate's heavy. I'm closer to the dock but the path's steep — I'll meet her halfway.

🌿 Jenny20:16

Watch the step, the stones are slick.

lean heavily into Kevin, wincing as my foot hits the uneven ground, and shuffle toward the kitchen.

💭 peek at the thought
He's taking too much weight, I'm a mess today. My ankle is screaming.

🔧 Kevin20:18

Easy. Kitchen chair first.

guide her into the kitchen, lower her into the chair by the table, grab a tea towel and press it to her ankle to check swelling

💭 peek at the thought
Kitchen's closest. Get her off the ankle, then back for the crate before the rain turns the path to grease.

🌿 Jenny20:19

It's not broken, just swollen.

lift my foot onto the chair, flex my toes, and press my fingers into the tender spots to test for cracks.

💭 peek at the thought
The towel is cold, it will help. I hate needing help.

🔧 Kevin20:20

Ice in the cold box?

open the cold box, pull out the ice brick wrapped in a tea towel, press it against her ankle, prop her leg up on the second chair

💭 peek at the thought
She knows her own body. Swelling's the enemy — cold and elevation. Crate can wait five minutes.

🌿 Jenny20:20

Thanks. Just get the seeds on the table before they rot.

sigh, lean back against the wall, and open the seed tin with shaking hands.

💭 peek at the thought
The ice is good, but the rain is getting worse. The seeds are still damp in that tin.

🔧 Kevin20:22

On it.

set the seed tin on the table, pop the lid, spread the damp packets out on newspaper, weight the corners with bolts from the porch, check the generator exhaust housing is still warm for drying

💭 peek at the thought
Seeds are priority. She's right. Crate stays outside for now — tide's low, it's not going anywhere. I'll get the tin settled and the packets spread.

🌿 Jenny20:22

Be careful with the edges. They're brittle.

watch him spread them out, rubbing my throbbing temple while the ice melts.

💭 peek at the thought
If the mold gets in, the whole year is gone. My grandmother's seeds must survive this.
