The arrival of the rain

The rain finally begins to lash against the roof as the pressure drops further. They stay inside, listening to the wind howl through the garden wall.

Through the night the barometer steadied at 993 hPa while rain hammered the cottage roof. Kevin kept watch on the generator and the dinghy lines; Jenny elevated her ankle, changed the cold compress, and salvaged the heirloom seed packets onto the generator housing to dry.

The barometer is dropping too fast.

wrap a cold cloth around my ankle and wince as I shift my weight.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is going to explode, and if that roof leaks any more, the seeds are the next thing to go.

Mm. Southwest back means the swell hits the dock broadside. Dinghy's lashed three lines?

walk to the porch door and peer out into the rain, checking the dinghy lines through the dark

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. 993 and falling fast means this isn't just a front — it's something tighter, meaner. My ankle's throbbing but the generator's still running smooth, seeds drying. Need to check the dinghy lashings before the swell wraps the point.

I need to get these seeds drying.

He always checks the dinghy first. It's the most important thing to him on this island.

Generator's holding steady. Exhaust warm enough?

step back inside, pull the door mostly shut against the wind, and check the generator gauges on the porch through the gap

💭 peek at the thought
She's focused on the seeds while the barometer plummets. Good — someone thinking ahead. The generator exhaust trick's working but if the power dies we lose heat. Should check the carb diaphragm again, make sure it's not flooding.
