The Afternoon Heat

The tide begins to recede, exposing the rocks near the shore. You and Jenny meet in the kitchen to discuss the evening meal plan.

The rain intensifies from the west, forcing the pair to stay indoors at the cottage. Kevin attempts to inspect the Yanmar carburetor while the humidity rises, and Jenny prepares the gathered sea beet for their meal while struggling to manage her swollen ankle.

🌿 Jenny21:00

We have the limpets and the sea beet. Can we just do those with some flour? I'm not going back down to the water today.

Limps to the table and sits heavily, propping the chair up to elevate the swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm starving enough to eat the notebook, but my ankle feels like it's being squeezed by hot combination. If he mentions the engine I might actually scream.

Flour's got mouse damage. Corn beef'll stretch further. Skillet's on the stove from breakfast — give me a minute.

walk to the wood stove and check the cast iron skillet, scraping out any residue with a spoon

💭 peek at the thought
She's done for the day. Ankle's telling her what I already knew — the swelling's not going down on its own. Flour's compromised but we've got corn beef. Can stretch it with the greens and limpets. Need to check the skillet's clean from this morning.

🌿 Jenny21:04

Fine. Just... don't overcook the limpets. They get like rubber tires.

Reaches for the bowl of sea beet and begins sorting through the leaves with trembling fingers.

💭 peek at the thought
Corn beef. Always the same. He doesn't see the mold on the rest of the grain or the damp in the air.

🔧 Kevin21:04

Corn beef first. Render the fat. Greens wilt in it. Limpets thirty seconds at the end.

open a tin of corned beef with the key, dump it into the cold skillet, and set it on the wood stove to start rendering

💭 peek at the thought
Hands shaking. Pain or cold or both. She's not asking for help. Won't. Limpets take thirty seconds in boiling water — any longer and she's right, they're boot leather. Corn beef first to render fat, then greens, limpets last.

🌿 Jenny21:06

I'll wash the limpets. They're full of grit.

Picks up the small knife and begins slicing the sea beet leaves into thin, uniform ribbons.

💭 peek at the thought
Thirty seconds. He thinks it's so simple while the humidity is literally rotting the seeds in that tin.
