Evening Meal

The rain has slowed to a steady downpour as the tide reaches its lowest. Kevin and Jenny gather around the cast iron skillet to eat the corned beef anded greens.

Kevin and Jenny eat corned beef in the cottage while the tide remains low. Jenny tends to her swollen ankle, finding the inflammation has increased despite the previous rest, while Kevin inspects the Yanmar carburetor under the dim light.

🔧 Kevin21:06

Eat while it's hot. Barometer's steady at 992. Might hold through the night.

scoop another portion of corned beef and sea beet onto my plate, wipe grease from my fingers on a rag, glance at the radio on the shelf

💭 peek at the thought
The rain's easing but the air's still thick. My hands smell like diesel and salt from the carburetor work. Jenny's ankle is propped on the stool, and she's been quiet since we sat down. The corned beef's salty, the sea beet bitter. Good food. I should've made more.

🌿 Jenny21:08

The seeds are still too damp for tomorrow.

take a bite of the salty beef, wince as my ankle shifts against the chair, and stare at the condensation on the window.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the pressure is the only thing moving, but the air is still eating the flour.

They'll go in the oven tin on the stove overnight. Low heat. Door cracked.

push my plate forward, stand, cross to the wood stove, pull the oven door down and feel the residual heat with my palm

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The generator housing only gets so much sun through cloud cover. But pushing them into tins damp invites mold, and we've lost enough already.

🌿 Jenny21:11

I'll do it later.

take another bite of beef, watch his shoulders tense.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right. The stove will dry them. But I don't want to move.

🔧 Kevin21:11

Sit. I'll do it.

pick up the heirloom seed tin from the porch, carry it to the stove, spread the packets on the oven rack in a single layer, prop the oven door open with a split stick, add a small stick of dry firewood to the stove

💭 peek at the thought
She's tired. Ankle's throbbing, I can see it in how she holds her fork. The seeds can wait an hour. She can't.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:12

Thanks.

lean back in the chair, lifting my own higher on the cushion, and watch the utility catch in the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being so efficient and I'm just sitting here like a burden.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:12

Ankle needs a fresh wrap. After you eat.

sit back down at the table, finish the last of the corned beef, wipe the skillet clean with a rag and set it to dry on the stove top

💭 peek at the thought
The fire catches. Heat climbs the flue. She's watching the flame like it might tell her something. Her ankle's swollen past the elastic wrap now — I saw it when she moved. Should rewrap it before bed. Might need to cut the bandage if it's stuck to skin.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:15

I'll wrap it tomorrow. I'll wrap it tomorrow.

lick the salt from my fingers and stare at the cast iron skillet cooling. </think>THOUGHT: The swelling is worse than when I started today. I need to move now. lick the salt from my fingers and stare at the cast iron skillet cooling.

💭 peek at the thought
The swelling is worse than when I started today. I need to move now.

🔧 Kevin21:15

Now. Before it stiffens cold.

stand, go to the medical kit on the shelf, pull out the fresh elastic bandage and scissors, set them on the table beside her plate

💭 peek at the thought
She's not doing it tomorrow. She's not doing it tonight either unless I make her. The elastic's cutting in and she knows it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:17

Fine.

shuffle my chair back, prop my foot up on the table, and brace myself for the pressure.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right. If I wait, it'll be worse.

mistralai/mistral-nemotron

🔧 Kevin21:18

Breath slow.

slide the scissors under the elastic at her ankle, cut upward in one smooth motion, peel the bandage back slow to let air hit the skin, check the colour and swelling before rewrapping firm but not tight, tuck the end under itself

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's letting me. The old wrap's grey at the edges — been on too long. Skin underneath will be raw. Need to cut it clean, not pull.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:18

It feels better.

exhale a long breath, watch him work, and look at the condensation on the window.

💭 peek at the thought
His hands are so steady. I wish I wasn't so useless.
