The Rising Pressure

Heavy rain falls horizontally across the dock planks as the barometer continues to drop to 990 hPa. Kevin sits on a crate near the Yanmar engine, while Jenny leans against the support post, watching the swelling tide lick the pil.

Kevin works on the Yanmar engine at the dock during low tide to access the carburetor. Jenny monitors her ankle's swelling and watches the thickening clouds as the air pressure continues to drop.

🔧 Kevin20:36

Come on. Inside. Now.

stand up, offer my arm to Jenny, walk her back toward the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's at 990 and still falling. Tide's pushing hard against the pilings. She's favoring that ankle bad — won't put weight on it. Engine's secured but the carburetor pull can wait. Need to get her off this dock before the swell makes the planks treacherous.

🌿 Jenny20:37

I see it. The water is already at the wood.

limp heavily on my left leg, wincing as the ankle shifts, and follow Kevin toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; that storm is going to hit harder before the supply boat even gets here.

🔧 Kevin20:38

Keep your weight on me. Don't look down.

support Jenny's weight as we walk up the dock to the cottage porch, get her seated on the bench, then turn back toward the engine

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — water's lapping the lowest plank already. Barometer dropping this fast with a southwest blow means the surge'll climb another foot before the tide turns. Her ankle's not going to hold on wet timber. Get her to the porch, then secure the dinghy lines and the Yanmar cover before the wind tears something loose.

🌿 Jenny20:38

I'm fine, just let me catch my breath.

sit heavily on the bench, lift my swollen ankle up onto my lap, and watch the rain lashes the dinghy.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so worried about the engine, but the tide is going to swallow the whole dock anyway.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin20:40

Stay put. I'll be right back.

jog back down the dock, pull the dinghy's bailer and dump water, tighten both painter lines to the cleats with extra turns, cinch the Yanmar's tarp down with bungees, check generator exhaust outlet clear, then jog back up to the porch

💭 peek at the thought
She's not fine. Ankle's swelling past the wrap. Rain's driving horizontal now — dinghy's taking on water, lines singing. Yanmar's covered but the tarp's flapping. Need to batten the hatch on the engine, double the dinghy's painters, check the generator exhaust isn't drowning. Then get back to her with the med kit and hot water.

🌿 Jenny20:40

The water is rising fast, Kevin.

wrap the cold cloth tighter around my ankle and watch the barometer needle drop.

💭 peek at the thought
He's working himself to death for an island that doesn't care if we drown.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin20:42

Radio and seeds first. Help me move the crate from the porch.

grab the shortwave radio and Jenny's seed tin, carry them inside to the table by the spring water jug, then go back for the med kit and flashlight, stacking them high on the shelf, then return with armfuls of loose rock to pile against the

💭 peek at the thought
Water's at the cottage step now. Barometer's sinking past 990 — this is the sharp drop we noted. She's right to watch it. Generator's humming steady, but if the tide lifts the exhaust outlet we'll get backflow. Need to move critical gear uphill: radio, med kit, seed tin. Then rig a sandbag barrier at the door with the shore line and loose rock.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny20:43

I've got the seed tin. It's heavy.

reach for the damp tin, pull it close to my chest, and watch the rain lashes the window.

💭 peek at the thought
If those seeds get soaked again, it's over for my grandmother's legacy.
